Those of you that live in/stay for extended amount of time in the DR, which insurance company to you use? Any thoughts for me? I'll be here until at least the end of September. I did look online before I came here but was slightly confused and therefore, did what I do best, and procrastinated. BMI, Palic, ARS Humano? Pros and cons?

Mpjuly is on the money, I pay $500 USD per year. Spent 2 nights in the hospital and saw a Heart Specialist and another specialist, cost me 66 pesos. Humano, call 809-757-0851 and ask for Jeannette Ogando. Lovely lady.
Tell her Geraldine sent you.

I buy mine in Canada. It works out to about 3 dollars a day for 2 people. Full coverage including Air Evac to Canada. I buy it from Intact Insurance. The product name is Travelwell. Not sure where you are from but similar products are probably available in the US and Europe

ARS Palic - just under $1,000 US a year for a person over 50 - so far so good - have used it more often than I wanted to. Just know that there is a six month waiting period before a serious chronic illnesses is covered. Hopefully nit the case for anyone reading this.

Universal is slightly better. Humano - the one we have - has a more complicated pre-approval procedure, at least in my experience.

Ultimately though, they are all crap.

I wonder what it covers. One person told me it covers helicopter evacuation to the Capital......that seems like a huge expense

I don't know why you say that. I have Universal Exclusivo - was in the hospital twice, never paid a dime. Never pay more than a few hundred pesos co pay ., always get reimbursed quickly for out of network doctors. No complaints whatsoever.

Of course, you are a Brit and used to having the cost included in your taxes and I am a gringa and used to having to pay $700 a month IF you can get coverage!

Read what I wrote again. :) Universal is better than Humano. We have Humano and always have to get everything -except for consultas- pre-approved.

I turn into a seething mass of resentment every time I go anywhere near the medical services here, precisely for that reason. We pay a lot of tax and still have to fork out for education and crappy health services. It's especially galling to hear the folks back home complaining about the NHS e.g. when they don't get their travel expenses reimbursed when they have to travel to another hospital for another FREE test or procedure.

My wife is trying to get me on her insurance through Humano.

It's almost $17,000 every 3 months for her, our daughter, and myself.

Any suggestions? I believe that was the platinum level.
