Free Zone owners complain about Customs Agency
Two business owners from the Free Zones in Oviedo and Villa Jaragua have complained that the director general of Customs, Fernando Fernandez, is abusing his power by closing down two factories for four months for no valid reason and without informing them in advance of the closure through the correct channels.

Randy Hirujo and Eduar Montas state that they have incurred losses of more than RD$25 million and 500 people have lost their jobs directly or indirectly in what are two of the poorest municipalities in the southwestern border region.

The businessmen say that a new clothing factory owned by the brother of a senator who has a new license to manufacture clothes and wanted to eliminate any competition, has been set up in the San Cristobal Free Zone with the help of the Customs Agency.

They also complained that the Treasury Ministry has turned down their application for the tax breaks to which their factories are eligible, as they are based in the Free Zones and considered as border development companies, while the Senator's brother's business, which is not on the border, has been granted all the corresponding concessions. According to Hirujo and Montas, the Customs Agency says it has not been paid the relevant tax for releasing their containers with their raw materials, but their RNC number has been blocked in the computer system so that they cannot pay.

They called on President Danilo Medina to help them resolve the situation, especially as he has said that he wants to develop the southwest of the country but employees are losing their jobs because of this action.
