Last year there was a conversation around Noni Fruit on this board and probably somebody can help settle an argument I'm having with my wife. She swears that there are lots of Noni trees in the DR and that the fruit goes to waste because Dominicans don't know about it. I explained to her that if that is true we could start a business there bottling Noni Juice since here in the US we pay around ten bucks for a 16 oz. bottle.
Thanks in advance.

Yes, this is the same fruit. Naturally, the Noni Juice from Tahiti sold by Utah multi-level marketers is the ONLY TRUE Noni Juice that works (hehehehehe), but go for it. The price in the US is necessary to pay the 6 levels of distributors, and to pay for all of those late-night TV infomercials.

BTW, this tree is a natural medicine tree. Other uses include:

If you have a fever, take a leaf , which is large,deep-green and shiny, and lay it on your forehead for about 20 minutes. The fever will break and go away within a half hour.

Also, if you have a sprained ankle, wrap the ankle and swelling area with leaves and the swelling will stop and decrease, and also lessen the pain.

The old-time sailors knew this tree, and in many places where boats can be brought in to shore, you will usually find these trees nearby. In the DR, I see noni fruits being sold on small tables in the Juan Dolio area , near the beach, and have seen many trees there. The fruits being sold are usually green and not ready to use. Give them a day or two in a paper bag until they turn mostly white.

To make your own Noni juice, you can put the fruits in a blender, when they are white and starting to get squishy and smelly, and run the blender on puree for about a minute. Take 2 tablespoons first thing in the morning before you eat, and you get the benefit.

abundant fruit tree in DR

Noni has been praised as being good for anything from parasites to cancer. Documented studies have yet to be published on these claims, however. When we analyzed it on a basic level, it was found to contain bacteriostatic and fungicidal components. No scientific research has been progressive enough to warrent endorsement as a valid med.

"Ethnomedicine" (using ancient home remedies, taken from remote villages with historically no healthcare) is an up and coming field of research. It is very interesting, the many plant and animal products that can be used medicinally.
