I was wondering, as a new homeowner in the DR, how many folks have home owners insurance? I have asked a few expats in our town and most don't get coverage - as they don't think its worth it and obviously are suspicious of the company paying out.

We are renting our house so in addition to comprehensive property insurance - we are looking at adding liability coverage as well.

So... what do you guys think...? Worth it...? Think they'll pay on a claim...? Lay it on us and please share your experience.

No homeowners, no fire, no flood, no windstorm, no earthquake, no mortgage. We pay lights, water, internet, and tv.

When I asked this question a while ago I was told that in the event of a major incident such as earthquake or hurricane, the Dominican insurance companies WOULD be able to pay out as the risks are re-insured internationally. So I have kept up my buildings insurance but still have my doubts - especially about Dominican efficiency in the event of a disaster.
