Another person who shares my love of Santo Domingo.

No the rest of the country does not look the same.

But if you are using "ghetto" in the street slang sense, there is some of that in various locations.

I think Santo Domingo is more and more becoming a modern city (the central polygon that is).

Neighborhoods like villa Mella , los alcarrizos, villa Juana, etc. are maybe 'ghetto' but you don't need to go there if you don't want to. There's not much there except cheap car repair shops that will charge you little and change your car's good parts for used ones.

I think a little ghetto lurks in every neighbourhood in Santo Domingo. No solid urban planning. There are few sectors where you won't find a mansion next to a shack, and commercial mixed in with residential. I haven't traversed the entire city but I've explored quite a bit of it. some sections of Bella Vista are not even close to ghetto. I was in an apartment in Naco several week ago that took up the whole fourth floor, somewhere in the 1000 sq meter plus, definitely not ghetto in anyway.

Ghetto??? Again what area's do you visit? I live in the Capital and while there are area's that leave much to be desired, like other big cities I may add, it is not one big ghetto.

With a little research you could have known you were coming to a developing country and what to expect. There are many other Caribbean islands you can visit if you want a cleaner version of this.

Pretty sure the only neighbourhood that doesn't have slums intermixed is around Piantini.
