This is very good news for the Dominican Republic that has good surfers and the potential for these to get even better.

Surfing was finally approved on 28 September 2016 by the Tokyo Olympics Organizing Committee and comes after more than decade long fight by the International Surfing Association (ISA). ISA argued that surfing is a truly global support, practiced in more than a 100 countries, making it more popular and more widely practiced than many current Olympic sports.
However, the biggest winner here is clearly Fernando Aguerre. The president of the International Surfing Association (ISA) has been fighting for the inclusion of surfing in the Olympic Games for more than a decade. His arguments are valid and understandable. ISA estimates there are over 35 million surfers worldwide.

the Dominican Republic has good surfers. good surfers do not win Olympic medals. there might be 35 million guys around the world who surf. there might be 5 countries that have surfers who can perform at a high level. hey, the USA is not cleaning up all the traditional medals like days of yore, so we have to keep adding sports that they can win.
