Looking at flights for the family...

if you use the spreadsheet approach, you can see the escalation.

e.g.
JetBlue - wed's & Sat's.... JFK - AZS

as 'the season ' creeps forward, one way tickets are:
$350, then 3-4 days later become $500 and 3-4 more go to $700 (all approx)

in 10 days running up to the holidays they double.... these are one way fares.

no avoiding it if you have working children....

The airplane advisory sites suggest early November will be a lull...

I can't do early until the work schedules get sorted.

Same every year...... AZS is bad.... I can beat it by doing EWR - POP, saves hundreds

your SDQ flights are always less

If you have any flexibility in the arrival airport, now or another time, you might be interested to check out Google's ITA Matrix. It is absolutely the coolest, most efficient search engine. You can't book there, but it will search all airlines, even obscure charters, sometimes. You can pick a month-wide search, a stay of any length, choose any/all NYC and DR airports, O/W or R/T.....it is quite comprehensive, and useful, I have found. It may be too late for you for the holiday....but I did just happen to see some $99 O/W fares JFK-STI in January, for those who prefer Santiago. Not so bad! $747 O/W to Samana (Dec 19), however...that is too bad! Humbug, indeed! :(

It is such a strange and ineffective business model to gouge your clientele for holidays, lose your customers' loyalty and then have go through the cheaper 7 process. Continental went through the process several times before merging with United. Pan Am, TWA, Eastern and many others are gone. So short sighted.

I was going to let you know that westjet was having a 2 day sale Monday and Tuesday but noticed black out dates for dec. 16 to Nov 5.

I did send in my request for the price drop so my return trip from Toronto will be 506.32 CAD all in. Thats almost free in US dollars

gracias, Anna - I get the sales from WestJet.

I only use them in the summer and for dog flying.

Otherwise I am JFK or EWR

$506 is a great price......like $400US..... $200 each way is cheap these days

Very simple, law of economics, supply and demand. If you are going to book around Christmas- New years than you need to do it almost 6 months in advance. You snooze you lose.

The airlines have every right to charge whatever they wish and, personally, I'm not affected adversely by it. My point is that these airlines have consistently filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy as a result of, ignorantly, overcharging what could be a loyal clientele. Their own executives lose large chunks of stock value. Everyone loses. I didn't "snooze" but am also not one to argue my own pocketbook.

I booked Jet Blue JFK to STI for $200 one way before they came out with the $99 fare; however, that fare's flight time was not convenient. I am flying into STI so I can go directly to the dentist; otherwise it's POP for me. Usually end August they post 2 day fares to the DR good through November, which works for me.

London Gatwick to POP Dec 23 to Jan 6

867 pounds..... high season

So, I have been rather steamed lately....

My UK daughter ( the o'bdient one) booked at a good time.

The nyc daughter (#2).... not so swift.

Her JFK - AZS ticket was $1,700 ---- Dec 23 -- Jan2..... I was furious

I checked y'day.... fare was $1,020 or so

Natch, I tell her to check that out..... Nada pasa

I check again today...... now $818.... Holy discount , BatMan (Christian)

I get pushier today & she's not at work

We now have an $845 credit w/ JetBlue.... for her, me or her mother
No refund, just JB credits is how they do it.

WHO CARES????
free Easter flight.... $845.....

hey 'Frica..... keep checking the fare changes
all airlines have a type of price guarantee but the customer needs to hunt it down

What a day..........

Water pump broke on the car.......
It was bad until Santa came early............
