Yes, I know it closed a couple of years ago.

Has it reopened with another name? How about the Hispaniola, still closed??

A cousin is flying down and January, and she likes that location, and asked me, but I don't have an answer for her.

Thanks.

I loved those hotels, Hispaniola was a lot of fun but they let it run down terribly Santo Domingo was what I thought "Old" Santo Domingo might have been like

I stay in a short term apartment rental (Airb&b) across from the Hispanola.

In October the hotel Santo Domingo was still closed, but their helicopter pad was very busy, I don't know why. There didn't seem to be any rehab work going on there.

The Hispanola hotel was closed but the Hispanola Casino was opened. They were actually doing work to the casino that included a mini Eiffel Tower outside. They have an exchange desk in the casino that has very competitive exchange rates. The hotel did not seem to be undergoing work.

I really like the neighborhood. It includes a La Cadena supermarket, a pharmacy, and an open air bodega for watching a ball game or dancing to a DJ. There is a metro station across the street and the bus connections are excellent.

The apartment building I stay in has multiple rental units for short or medium term for reasonable rates. PM me if you want details.

Well, now that I know it's definitely closed, where would you recommend a fiesty Dominicana stay on the Malecon? I think she'll be coming alone, so would prefer a hotel rather than an apartment, for security reasons.

It's been too many years since we stayed in a hotel in SD.

They just renovated the rooms in the Jaragua. They were closed for a year. Should be good there now. They have plenty of action there also. Casino, Sportsbook, bars restaurants, etc.

The old Hotel Paz, property of Angelita Trujillo. Here it is when it was a new and chic hotel in the then (1950's) outskirts of Santo Domingo.

And across the street - where they built the Hotel Santo Domingo - was Estancia Ramfis. His polo grounds.

And across the street from there, was a farm that began at Lincoln and the malecon & Independencia, and ended at the Coca Cola factory. It belonged to my husband's grandparents.

My brain is failing me Are you the one who posted some time ago about their ancestors having the property "appropriated" by Trujillo?

Yep. In 1955 Trujillo decided their farm was the perfect place for his big Fair. Today that farm houses the children's hospital, the Centro de los Heroes/Metro stop, most of the government offices, La Feria, main post office, etc., and O&M University sits where his grandparent's home was. My husband was born in that house.

Have you ever tied to figure out the real value of that property? probably make you cry

I have stayed in the Barcelo ( previous "lina" ) a few weeks ago, which was a pleasant experience at a good location.
Avoid the Radisson ( Naco ), poor quality for a high price.

Unfortunately, Hotel Santo Domingo is closed and will not open in a long time. If someone wants to turn this into a hotel again, some serious renovation work will take its time.
