On this day, December 5, 1492: arrival of the Spaniards to our island

The December 5, 1492, Christopher Columbus arrived on his first trip to the island of Quisqueya, a name that the Taino Indians gave the island named by Columbus as the Spanish, which today serves as a seat for the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

Large gold deposits led to the establishment of settlements, the first of which was founded in 1493 in La Isabela. The Tainos were put into slavery and over the next 25 years almost to its total disappearance.Bartholomew, the brother of Columbus, was named governor of Spanish and in 1496 founded the city of Santo Domingo.Santo Domingo quickly became the most representative of the Spanish Royal Crown and subsequently in a city of great influence and power.

The Spanish island remained under Spanish control until 1697, when the western part of the island became a French possession in 1804 became the Republic of Haiti, called "Saint Domingue" by the French. With information Efem?rides.com

Damn, the Spaniards love the 5th of December.
In Holland they also had a Spaniard arriving on the 5th of December but he came with presents and not to kill ;)

And this illustrates how Frank has to put his political spin on everything.

A European refugee who was allowed to live in Panama and the DR.
One who could not hack it in the DR returned to Holland and now whines about foreigners.
Yet he could take his beautiful Dominican daughter to Holland to give her the chance of a better life.

Maybe you could do with a modicum of compassion for other victims of life.
Throughout history humans have always killed, explored, conquered and enslaved.
It is not a domain of Europeans as history clearly shows us.
Apparently we have learned very little.

Indeed not. Perhaps, however, we should all rededicate ourselves to learning the lessons of history, and to treating all people with dignity and respect, and maybe even, a little love.

What on earth is frank talking about .The spanish occupation of the European low countries was one of the most brutal in European history and is the story behind the great opera Don Carlos . Show me a spanish occupation that was not cruel to the extreme .. certainly not in Latin America nor in the Philippines . The dreadful day that spanish landed here in the DR is nothing to celebrate , but to mourn .

Difficult post.
Imagine a world where one race, nationality or faith hasn't forced its will and beliefs upon another.
Good luck.
