I searched the forums and my own posts to see where I mentioned this, but couldn't find it.

Anyway, this is the new supermarket chain I previously said is entering the Dominican market. They plan to build 10 stores nationwide, the first one open today in Naco, SD.

I think its an American chain.

SD being South Dakota? Why in Spanish then? Or is Nco a part of Santo Domingo? I have been to the one in Hollywood Florida.

Yes, I heard it's already open (on Tiradentes in Naco). Some kind of whole food kind of supermarket. It's where hotel Naco used to be.

I don't think it's a foreign chain though, seems a local initiative to me.

As in maybe they might carry US/French products? And heaven help me: be the conduit for kosher food? Be still my heart!

Went by there today on Tiradentes around 1pm and all the gates were closed and no way to enter the parking lot. Apparently, they are not open yet.

Superfresh was owned by A & P out of NJ. They recently went bankrupt. Perhaps someone grabbed the name.

Not an American chain. I know the family that owns it.
Look like Italians, but are Haitians with many years experience working in Haiti.
As a specialist shop it is great, lots of things you cannot find anywhere else.
Possibly a bit pricey to do your weekly grocery shopping though.
Thought they also had something to do with Supermercado Amigo on GMR Avenue, but was told the other day they weren't.

miesposo visited it few days ago when he was in SD. sent me a bunch of pictures, lots of fancy shmancy imported organic stuff. kinda pricey but not outrageously. he brought me croissants, delicious.

That's not them. The supermarket here is a local guy that started the store, using the same name.

Opening 10 stores as the OP states seems a little far fetched to me.

If only they opened a Trader Joe's instead.

That would be fantastic, but unfortunately, I imagine it would be nothing like the ones in the States and prices would be double for nearly everything.

I went by this Super Fresh SM on Saturday. To be honest, I was rather unimpressed. Prices were ok on some items like aquacate and some meats, but on the whole other items were quite expensive.

Where the place shined was in the bakery area. Chocolate croissant for $RD48 seemed a good deal to me. The coffe bar is good with Illy Italian coffee, but the area to sit and enjoy those items is no good at all. The sun is covering half the sitting area making it unusable and also the seats are quite uncomfortable.

Does this place have locally grown organic fruits n veggies?

Depends on what you mean by organic? Are there USA inspectors here to assure that people use only approved fertilizers? I doubt it, but there is probably a much better chance that one is buying veggies which are naturally grown here than elsewhere. They don't have the money to buy the chemicals from Archer Daniels Midland and Monsanto. So instead would be using the overflow form their out houses for fertilizer. Much more organic that way!

I passed by and went in this afternoon. It's a nice store, bigger than I thought it would be. The assortment is much like the existing supermarkets on the high end (Supermercados Nacional , Bravo, Cadena), added some organic products (imported) and a bigger choice of organic vegetables and fruits. I'm not very sure if they can compete with Nacional across the street with their marketing and purchasing power, but if I'd live near i'd prefer this store because of: no bad supermarket smell, better music (I hate the standard supermarket tunes you hear in all supermarkets here), looks clean, some new products (unfortunately not yet too many).

Decent parking as well. I'd compare it in size (store and parking) to Bravo Nunez.

Worth a visit to check out.

Was over there in the weekend, great selection of fruits and veggies, also the bread and meat looked great.
My only disappointment was the prices :/
