PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti ? Lawmakers in Haiti chose the country?s Senate leader on Sunday to lead a caretaker government that will fill the void left by last week?s departure of President Michel Martelly and perhaps ease lingering tensions that recently pushed the deeply polarized nation into political crisis.

Jocelerme Privert was elected as provisional president and sworn in by Haiti?s bicameral legislature.

Mr. Privert, a cabinet minister under President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, was one of three candidates vying to lead an interim government that is supposed to last only 120 days.

His chief task will be to swiftly smooth political divisions that have left Haiti without an elected president chosen by voters or a completed Parliament because of suspended elections.

Mr. Privert promised that new elections would be held ?as soon as possible.?

Mr. Martelly, who was barred from seeking a consecutive term as president, left office a week ago without a leader in place.
