Felix Bautista asks to be taken off the list of the most corrupt
San Juan de la Maguana senator Felix Bautista has asked Transparency International (TI) to take him off the list that shows him as one of the most corrupt men in the world on the grounds that the cases against him have been dismissed by the Supreme Court of Justice. Bautista is the organizational secretary of the ruling PLD party.
TI has replied to him asking for a series of financial documents from companies he or his relatives have been or are still linked to in connection with contracts secured during his time as head of the Office of Supervising Engineers of State Works (Oisoe), tax payments and his legal declaration of assets since 2012.
Last year the organization launched a project called "Unmask the Corrupt" with the aim of exposing corruption and showing the extent to which corrupt officials and leaders are able to get away with it.
The first stage was to allow people all over the world to submit information relating to leaders and officials who they considered to symbolize corruption and impunity and 15 individuals were chosen for submission to a public vote between 9 December 2015 and 9 February 2016.
Following the votes in first place was the former President of Ukraine with 27.4% of the vote, followed by Petrobras with 24.8%, former Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli with 21.1% and Felix Bautista with 20.4%.
On 4 January, Bautista sent a 16-page letter to the Berlin-based organization and his lawyers met with their legal representatives in New York. In his letter, Bautista outlined the legal cases against him and described how the cases had been dropped. One month after receiving this letter, TI responded with a request for company data, his goods and properties in the United States and at home, bank account details and other information.
In the Unmask the Corruption anti-corruption online exercise, Felix Bautista is singled out for allegedly enriching himself with millions in state funds, and for having political connections that appear to make him untouchable.
