Bicycle route for Santo Domingo
Campaigning for his fourth term at the helm of the city government of the National District yesterday, Thursday 18 February 2016, Mayor Roberto Salcedo launched the symbolic start of construction of an urban bicycle route that he said would be eight kilometers long. The first phase of the Circuito Bici will be built along the median strip in the four-lane Av. Winston Churchill, from Andres Julio Aybar and Rafael Augusto Sanchez streets. The circuit will consist of exclusive bicycle lanes and the extended route will go from the Centro de los Heroes in the south through to the Jardin Botanico to the northwest. It will pass by 12 malls, three Metro stations and four universities.
Diario Libre editor Ines Aizpun comments today, Friday 19 February 2016 that the proposal is mere propaganda and suggests designing it on the sidewalks so that the city government finally gets round to fulfilling its duty to repair them.
