Truck water vs colmado water...

I used to refill my five gallon jug off the back of one of the trucks that come around all the time. "Reverse osmosis, UV light" I've been sick twice in the last three months. Then about a month ago, I noticed the truck water had a muddy taste and switched over to buying water at the colmado in sealed bottles~I haven't been sick since. It's a cash business and if a driver tops off the tank with tap water, he can prob clear another 500 or more pesos a day without the parent company knowing. It's a hassle to haul the water now and more expensive, but there's no way I'll buy off a truck again. I'm hoping to get one of those ceramic cones now..

i don't get this, you've been a member for 10 years and you act like a total newbie? water from trucks is not meant for drinking. stick to 5 gallon bottles.

I couldn't imagine drinking the water that comes from the trucks. I looked into our cisterna one fine day when it was about empty. Stuff and things in there! One of those ceramic things are made for people who dip teir water out of the river. The five gallon bottles are cheaper than constant trips to doctors. I pay 40 pesos per bottle and since I am an old goat pay another 20 pesos for a kid to carry it home for me and up the stairs.

There are trucks here in Higuey that are for cisterns and those for drinking.. The drinking water trucks refill five gallon jugs for 25 pesos. Mi esposa was buying off the truck too...

When I was living in Sosua ten years back, I only got water in the small bottles.. When a truck goes around claiming it's twice purified, "para mejor salud, tomo Aqua Illeyna" they're selling drinking water. We have a cistern as well for tap water.

We get water from the government water system via their water pipes and I would never drink it.

The trucks fill up from the same government water system at the main plant in Santiago. (Usually)

Remember, this is a lawless society. You could be served something poisonous that kills you and there will be nobody at fault here.
Always assume you are being lied to and use your own common sense as to the safety of the item or situation.

You have been given some good advice. Here's more. You can drink well and cistern water if and only if you have the proper filtration system in place, charcoal filters, RO filters, sediment traps, filters for e-coli, fecal coliforms, etc. If you go this route, have the water analysed first to determine what the contaminants are, then have a specialist install the proper filters. I have friends who drink cistern and well water because they have proper filtration systems in place, not some cheapy cheapy quick fix solution available in the local hardware stores.

I would never ever drink the water from a truck in the DR. 5 gallon bottles cost 30 pesos.

The problem is either the drivers are either topping off the trucks with tap water, or the equipment used is.n't working(or existing) and they don't care. As posted above, even the colmado water in presealed bottles can be contaminated. I'll be doing my own system in a few months, prob distilling using a $20 solar vacuum tube. We only use about five gallons a week.

Hey..I had one of the Filter Pure Cone filters..best money I spent..bought brand new bottle at LaSirena and filtered our tap water..after doing some research on Reverse Osmosis..and are you kidding me..think about where you live and whether you think those 5 gallon bottles contain clean bacteria free water bottled in a sanitary environment!!
I had so much gut issues while living there and once we stopped buying those jugs was much improved!! and other than the $50 US for the Ceramic filter and bucket ..no more running for bottled water!! Filter Pure(formerly owned by Lisa Ballantyne is now Wine to Water..amazing product!!

I buy Agua Crystal. Most expensive of all the bottled water brands (60-65 pesos per 5-gallon botellon, depending on the seller), but brought in from SD and one of the cleanest waters there can be. Pelicano is another good one.

Crystal belongs to Mercasid, a DR food conglomerate.

Many years ago I saw an ad for bottled water. Went something like this: "during your lifetime you will drink 42,000 gallons of water. You can have your kidneys filter it or our filters". From then on I only drank commercially filtered water. I am the only one in the family that has never had kidney stones.

The trucks selling potable water (haven't seen those for a long time in SD) take the water from CAASD purify it and resell it in jugs from their truck. It's ofcourse much cleaner than the water from the faucet or CAASD trucks but besides that the purification process is not as secure as the jug sellers like Agua Crystal and Planeta Azul, a lot can go wrong as well inside the tank of the truck.

The known bottle sellers though also just buy the water from CAASD, purify it, bottle it and sell it.
