Prenatal/birth care in La Romana?

I'm an American married to a Dominican. We have been living elsewhere, but were planning to move to the DR in July.

My dilemma is I just found out we're expecting our third child sometime around October or November. I am curious if any other expats have experience and or could with in on the quality of prenatal care and birth, particularly near La Romana since that is where we planned to live. The only things I have found online scare me! Really questioning whether we should change our plans and had to the States instead...

Did you have problems with either of your pregnancies or deliveries? Avoid public hospitals and carefully select your doctor and you should be ok.

In La Romana you have an excellent hospital -- the Centro Medico Central Romana. It is a modern facility.
I would visit them and meet with different obstetricians to choose one that you are most comfortable with.
I personally know Dr. Jose Lopez, the director, and know he maintains the standards high.

Here is a link that tells of the visit of James E. Rothman, Nobel Prize of Medicine in 2013, who visited upon the opening of the hospital in 2014.

The hospital is equipped so women can give birth at their own bed accompanied by husband, mother and pediatrician.

Dr. Victor Abreu
Dr. Yadira Cede?o (woman)
Dr. Sandel de la Rosa

Info on NICU?

I didn'the have any problems with either of my living girls, but I did lose a baby at 22 weeks for unknown causes between them. Anyone know what level NICU there is at any of the hospitals inDR?

Just be aware, the quality of even the best care here in the D.R. is almost substandard compared to the 1st World. You have a greater chance of having an unnecessary cesarean section here than anywhere else, other than Brazil.

Is that true even in mothers who have successfully given birth vaginally before? What I have heard from my sisters in law is that they apparently all have pelvis that are "too small" to give birth naturally (even though they all have significantly larger hips than I do, and I managed to birth two! ) are the c section rates the same for all hospitals, or address they better at the private ones?

thousands of women give birth in DR successfully but the rates of infant and maternity deaths are still relatively high in comparison to europe/USA. if you are to stress too much about this then give birth where you are or head to the states. other than that, come over, use a good hospital and hope for the best. bear in mind that being pregnant you will not be able to get regular health insurance in DR.

Shalena is nowhere near La Romana, and to the best of my knowledge she was unable to proceed with her plan.
