Yesterday, the Santo Domingo mayor's office organised a graduation ceremony for 2,500 people who had supposedly been taught to read and write as part of the "Quisqueya Aprende Contigo" literacy campaign.
Embarrassingly, when journalists interviewed some of the so-called graduates, they said they had not attended any lessons and had no idea why they were at the ceremony or what it was about.

The video is all over social media today.

all they knew is that somebody gave them 500 pesos and told them to show up.

then, they will add these 2500 people to the list of people who are now literate.

Unbelievable! Such a shame and disgrace regarding an important and chronic issue in the DR. So can we say Quisqueya aprende contigo is a farce?

Then people wonder why the illiteracy rate is so high in 2016??!!! The 21st century. Being able to write your name does not mean a person is literate. The illiteracy rate is much higher then the government will have anyone believe.

From a language perspective anyone notice the vernacular of the people interviewed? I am not surprised. Out of curiosity, I wonder how literate they are although they have no idea why they are participating in the event.

Must not be too literate if they cannot read the sign in front and then say they do not know what is going on.

My wife watched this and could not stop laughing. It really is not that funny, she said, but the fact is that politicians think they can get away with anything. That is what they do. Many do nothing.

The leaders are not only to be blamed. The problem with this program, and with much of Dominican politics, is that money funnels down the chain without proper attention or with no supervision whatsoever.

Rosa said that she personally knows people who received money from this program who did not teach, but rather registered people and sent the list in to hq. More than just one "culpable." Corruption is unfortunately endemic to Dominican society from the luxury jepeta owner to lowest living under tin in barrios.

And people wonder why there is so much apathy!!!!

dominican media are talking about it today. the government calls it provocation, opposition denies, usual dance.
i did crack up. however at comments in la zeta. some of the posters are in dire need of literacy classes themselves...

i especially loved this one:
esta escuchando a este voca basuca hablando y me acorde de aquellos anos en que el era el seretario de PLD que ere un mentiroso simulador fabulador de marca mayor y oi como se defendia y defendia como gato vocarriva y le buscava la vuelta para confundir y justicar lo que dice el vedeo. buen sinverguenza..

voca basuca had me a bit confused for a moment...

Tragic but indicative of life in our beloved failed state. If people just did things the right way we would be so much further along.
