The surgeons in these programs are the elite in thier field , like "Smile Train". They are not looking for free training they donate their time. They do train other physicians but it is a medical school type environment. Mostly these programs are giving better care than you could pay for. Awesome cause.

Check out operation smile. A group of highly trained and dedicated surgeons giving their time and energy to a cause that offers kids in third and second world countries the opportunity to lead a normal life without being ostracized.

A very worthy cause I recon.

Give generously if you have the means.

medical programs often take place in puerto plata (and DR in general). in the past i took part in few such events. each time the doctors were professionals and specialists in their field, simply dedicating their time.

Agreed, I have nothing but admiration for the doctors and nurses who volunteer here, they do make a difference

Every year a large group from Miami comes to our little corner of DR. They are set up by specialty, everyone triaged and sent to see the doctor/s they need. Free meds and vitamins are distributed. I always go down and volunteer to help, it's kind of a zoo outside.

I have sponsored two surgeries through Smile Train and orgs like this are true miracle workers doing dozens of surgeries per day while training local doctors the procedure. Cleft pallet is a common birth defect that can be usually fixed in under 20 minutes. Babies born with this have difficulty nursing and face a lifetime of stigma. This is a great return on a charity.

As I understand it is no doctor gets a license for anything beyond practicing! A doctor can have 30 years of experience and he or she is still just practicing medicine.
All the doctors I have seen doing this type of free work were good experienced doctors not bottom feeders who needed the practice though. And i have been on the perephery of 3 different free medical projects in this part of the DR.

an article about this event. notice different location listed so it's worth calling before going:
http://www.puertoplatadigital.com/verNoticia.aspx?Id=21528

The change of location is most likely correct. In February, the surgical group that visits Puerto Plata from time to time ended up seeing and treating patients at the hospital in Imbert because of the construction work going on at Ricardo Limardo.
