I have to do some traveling on election day (Sunday May 15) and was wondering what is closed that day. Do the stores, gas stations, restaurants stay open that day?
Are there any travel restrictions in the capital?

This election does not seem as tense as some I have seen in the past but in the I seem to remember there were restrictions on political gatherings and parades right around the election.

As far as I remember no political gatherings and no alcohol sales or consumption from 12 hours before ie 8pm the day before to a couple of hours after the polls close at 6pm, but I may be wrong re when you can start drinking again.

there are always certain businesses that are considered somewhat "special": gas stations, pharmacies, hospitals, airports and so on.

If this is true, this is hysterically funny. I cannot BEGIN to imagine elections in the US without alcohol, either before or after. I do sort of lurve it, though.

What is "closed" on election day is the ability to elect anyone who will actually do the right thing for this country.

Oh, bitter. You need to take a vacation, get off the island for a couple of weeks. I find it tremendously therapeutic. But then again, one comes back.....

I have heard this but I wonder if it is enforced. I thought no alcohol sales on Good Friday but many places were open and openly selling drinks. Is this just a Santo Domingo thing or who knows if it has been enforced in the past. That is a way to businesses to lose a lot of money on a Saturday night.

I suppose it depends on where you are. Anyway, this election is thankfully behind us, so this is closed.
