Green Action warns of drying rivers
The Green Action Foundation president has told reporters from Diario Libre that the rivers surrounding the city of Constanza could disappear as a result of deforestation and extraction of construction material from riverbeds in the area.

Nelson Bautista warned that the rivers are in a "sudden death" situation due to the intensive felling of trees and the misuse of wetlands in the watersheds of the small rivers.

Bautista made the wry observation that "the attacks against the environment in Constanza are being fought by commissions composed of officials of the 15th rank who investigate the complaints."

He revealed that the deforestation and plowing of these high-altitude lands takes place at night and over the weekends.

He also complained of the deafening noise of dozens of water pumps that run for seemingly endless hours.

The environmental advocate told reporters that it was sad to see the bare hillsides resulting fro:surprised:surprised:surprised:surprised

Climate change has to be factored in as well as man made impacts. After three years of very dry weather and drought in some areas, the government should wake up and realize that deforestation, along with too much fresh water extraction combined with global warming is speeding up the river devastation process. The same is true of fresh water aquifers in California, Nevada, etc. They are at their lowest levels in years. I'm betting that clean fresh water will become a more valuable commodity than oil in the future. When NAFTA was first negotiated, the import and export of fresh water was included in the provisions. Someone had the foresight to plan for the future. The DR is a relatively small land mass with limited fresh water resources. Add water use by industrial operations, the farming industry, etc. and the future of DR water resources looks rather dim unless the government is willing to implement and enforce water use legislation.

They need back "Pedro Manuel de Jes?s Candelier" to take care of forest or somebody just like him. While this guy was in charge, he really made people obey the law. Good or bad he put an end to this type of nonsense.

Water availability and food production will be nature's population control method of choice in the years to come if we don't nuke ourselves out of existence before then. In this country, the political and social development is so stunted by corruption and indifference that eco-issues of good stewardship are so far down the list of ideas to consider that there is no hope of change until there is no water left at all.

Time will tell if this situation changes quickly enough to make a difference, but I suspect not. Come visit the DR now, in the future it will be a deserted island for sure.

I'm hoping the government has the same epiphany with water that they now have with sustainable sources of power generation. Massive solar panel electrical production systems, trash burning plants to generate steam for electrical turbines, etc. A worst case scenario would involve the construction of large desalination plants along the coast to supplement diminishing fresh water supplies. Costly to run and maintain. The old saying, "When your up to your a-- in alligators, it's hard to remember your original objective was to drain the swamp", comes to mind.

BTW. Years ago after NAFTA was implemented, the Premier of NL was approached by a company to export fresh water from one of our inland lakes. Basically pipe it to a harbour, load it into tankers, and sell it on the international market. He said no even though it meant the loss of jobs. He was smart enough to realize that, under NAFTA, once you opened the tap, you couldn't shut it off.

"Politically Connected" contractors extract their sand and gravel from the rivers and their banks.
Been doing it for decades even though there are "Laws" prohibiting doing so.
They make the rivers so wide that the flow stops, "Killing" the rivers.
It WILL NEVER STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dominicans "say" they have "Orgullo Dominicana" (Dominican Pride) but they really care more about "Dinero" than their country!!

Good post. What people fail to realize is that there is no more water in the world today than there was 20k years ago. However, Humans are using more than ever before causing in some countries catastrophic results including pouted fresh water sources and over usage causing the loss of the water source. In the DR as well as other Caribbean nations, it's a simple math calculation accomplished by the use of monitoring wells strategically drilled in different parts of the country and testing the water source for purity. Measuring a water source for capacities has been being done for decades but unfortunately, these countries usually wait until they are in dire straights before instituting conservation measures that would head off the loss of their water sources. Increased local populations as well as increased usage due to tourism are the main culprits in the Caribbean however countries with high manufacturing facilities can have a huge impact on the countries water sources such as was the case in Puerto Rico, and is increasingly becoming the case in the DR as manufacturing companies increase especially in Santiago are already having an impact and if left unchecked, will destroy what is left of the areas watershed. Currently, most large resorts are required to arrange for their own water supplies and waste water facilities. Even the Carnival cruise facility has these facilities in place. If people throughout the world do not understand and come to grips with this future issue, these problems will continue to grow until a time where we human beings will have even depleted the oceans to the point that they will no longer be a viable resource for making fresh water as they are now. Any doubters can simply look up the brand new Desalination plant in San Diego, and how much that water costs to make VS what the people are use to paying. These much higher costs for water production will put into motion higher prices for everything we use because NOTHING IN THE WORLD can be manufactured without purified water, and humans can't exist without it.

I agree. Too bad they re so damn dumb that when they will realize it, it will be too late. I would like to see if the people will be able to drink money instead of water.

This is just one more part of what is the start of desertification in the DR. Haiti was once just as green as the DR before they cut down all the trees for charcoal production...

This may be a little off topic but I am going to let all of you in on a little secret
(says my Haitian neighbors) Haitians are scared to cook with gas. End of story.
