Telecom chief promises cheap, fast Internet in 2 years

Santo Domingo.- Dominican Telecom Institute (Indotel) executive director Alberty Canela on Tuesday promised cheap and fast Internet in two years, when the optic fiber networks will be installed in the entire country.

The official said the government has already installed 219 kilometers of optic fiber cable between Santo Domingo, Santiago and Puerto Plata, which he affirms expedites the development of the country?s telecom industry.

He said as the regulator, Indotel monitors the installation of optic fiber, to guarantee the best work.

?At firs we were requesting 30 million dollars to install optic fiber, but since we have it, we?re talking around eight million dollars,? Canela said prior to laying a wreath at the Altar of the Nation to mark World Telecom Day.

They cant get the electricity to work half the time, so I fully expect the "Internet upgrade" will follow suit...

The past weeks Tricom has been installing fiber optics in our street, so now we can choose between Claro and Tricom. I'm waiting for them to start fighting over the customers and get a better deal.

It makes one wonder why the government does not take over the telecommunications business as it has with the power and water since they have done such a fine job with those two businesses.
