the way the press writes about this on regular basis makes you expect that half of the population should have died off by now. but no such thing. so i recon it's good for dramatic press articles but does not translate into the reality of starved nation.

hunger is expressed in many different ways....

the way the press writes about this on regular basis makes you expect that half of the population should have died off by now. but no such thing. so i recon it's good for dramatic press articles but does not translate into the reality of starved nation.

Sometimes it is expressed by crime, sometimes immigration, sometimes corruption.

Look at Venezuela , no one looks hunger in the videos there. In fact, less hungry than DR.... and yet .....

For the poor people - and there are a lot of them in DR - a few pesos here and there does make a big difference.

For the rest of us, it's more of an annoyance when I go to the supermarket and I see the prices are up again.

Horrible translation but generally speaking it looks as if prices are increased in relation to prices in the US not because of actual increased demand or currency fluctuation.

What I have noticed recently , I will say since Christmas ,is that the prices of goods that I buy on a regular basis are now varying much more between the various supermarkets and pharmacy chains than they did before . For example ,prices of platanos maduros and grapes can vary by as much as 30 % between chains and the prices of Micardis 80 and Atarax 25 vary by more than 20% . It is annoying to have to shop around for pretty basic items but it is now necessary. .I can understand how people can say that the cost of living in a very ordinary way is not cheap but ,on the other hand if you want to live just moderately well with some quailty angus beef, interesting vegetables, good french wine and cheeses and melons and exotic fruits then this place is excellent value . Just try to live the same way in London or Paris .

Prices always seem to go up rather than down, no matter where you reside. Just returned to the U.S. after 6 delightfully economical months and found the prices in the grocery stores through the roof! Gasoline is cheaper then when I left, but everything else has gone up in price. A tank of propane for the grill has gone from $19.95 US to $24.95 US in the same store.

Thirty-six percent discount on fruits and vegetables every Tuesday at Jumbo makes a BIG difference. We can't always make it there that day, but the discount adds up, big.

Many people load up on platano that day. And, many other things.

I am buying 2 months worth of anything we use a LOT of before I go.
"My Dominicans", have absolutely no idea of the price of ANYTHING,when to buy it on sale, or if the super markets are not giving them the "SALE PRICE".
AND, if I were to give them the money to buy what they need,as they need it, the money would be gone before my flight landed in Boston!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AND by the time I got to my son's house the phone would be ringing,....."No Hay Comida"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Election over and right off the bat the price of 5 gallon bottles of water went from RD$60 to RD$65 at the local colmado here. I notice on the label-Planeta Azul it says $RD55 vs. before it was $RD48.

Jimmy, stop buying a bottle or two at a time from the colmado. Call the water company of your choice and arrange for home delivery. It's cheaper, more convenient and you can never have too much drinking water on hand.
