Can anyone give me information regarding HIV/Aids in the Dominican Republic or the caribbean in general. Anything from stats to personnel stories to the ways of the sex industry would be helpful.

Two and one-half percent of the population is said to be HIV positive. Could go higher in Haiti. I was with a woman from Monti Cristi last night and she was alarmed at the high HIV rate in her town.

Montecristi

I have two aunts who work in the Public Hospital in Montecristi. They too have shown alarm. I myself know 3 ppl. in town who are/were HIV positive. Two have died. The third was diagnosed when he was barely 20, he is still alive. Sad.

But I have my doubts. Montecristi is a very small town where people most likely know virtually everybody or know "someone that know somebody". One cannot infer anything from statistics collected via word of mouth. I am in no way disagreeing or agreeing with your friend, but I'd like to see more hard numbers before making my mind about the real seriousness of this scenario. I think I will try to find it, now I am curious.

HIV

Pib,

If you are going to pursue this subject, you should check back as far as you can to see when the government admitted there were HIV cases in the DR.

I know that in '86-'87 the government denied there were any HIV cases in the DR. That was about the time that Haiti was being considered as a major source of HIV!!!

The point is that whenever you get a "number of cases reported" you have to consider the source.

Being known as a country with a high prevalence of HIV is not good for tourism :( or should it be a ..... :) ?

Pib,

What did you find out? Or are you worried what you may find?
Of course I am worried at what I may find out.

I am still trying to find a reliable source for AIDS info in my hometown, I am beginning to fear there's not such thing as reliable source. I will keep you posted.

HIV

PIB,

I hope I didn't sound like I was "getting on your case". The fact is that ALL countries have reasons to either undersate or overstate all medical, and also social, problems.

In the DR it may be different things than the US. Still it is a common problem.

Please do keep me informed. I have a special interest in the DR.

Thanks.

wanna share my experience

Me as a house wife was happy, but I could not know how this deadly disease came across in my life. Now I am exposed to this chronic disease. I know that I cannot come out of this but due to this I have been suffering with many disease like depression, loss of energy, sever weakness, anemia, loss of memory. At this time I came across with an ad at TV about Dr. K.Rao, who is a infectious disease specialist. I gone through his website by name www.drraomd.com and I felt like visiting his center which is located at New York by name Holisitc Health Care and Research Center. When I met the doctor I felt tha that I got a new hope of surviving for some days at least. So, I said him about my sufferings. Examining me he gave me some of the medications which is prepared by himself at his center and they are natural herbal dietary supplements. When I started consuming them I felt that they were working on me and I started to improve in my health conditions. These latest vaccine has been working on me by which I am able to work confidentially and lead a normal life. Really this is the institute where we have hope of survival. I really thank him for making me a normal person.

Sounds like an advertisement for an "alternative" (and probalby schlock) quasi medical practice. Don't get me wrong in my practice I did encourage patients to seek some form of non "western" medicine (ie acupuncture and some herbal supplements) but this one smells.

I can tell you stories. Many Dominicans comes illegally or with a visa to NY to stay. The easy way to get a green card is marrying an American. Some pay for the green card and they are safe, some live with them as partner because they do not have the money or cannot find somebody to pay. These people are gambling with their lives. Most of the Dominicans have partners in DR waiting for them. They get infected here and when they get their travel permit they go back to DR to their partner and bingo without knowing they infect their long life partner.
How do I know?
I am a caseworker for the Dept. of Aids in NY.
After many years I still feel it when I get a new case and know that they got infected because they are drug users or promiscuous, but more when somebody (specially hispanics) that don't drink alcohol or use drugs.

I had a case of a Dominican woman infected who was prostituting in a bar in Alto Manhattan. She worked there until she got too sick. Can you imagine how many Dominican men she infected.

My center only deals with HIV infected because other agencies refused to serve this population. Only HIV infected and AIDS come to my center and I see more and more hispanics in the waiting room.

"HIV/Aids" In The "DR"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not in "NEW YORK"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just shows that "some PEOPLE", have an "AGENDA",and can not be stoped from "working" it!!!

I have been having "unprotected" sex in the DR and elsewhere for over 40 years! At "60",I can now say that if I get "AIDS",I will be dead before it can kill me!!!!!!:cheeky:
