Hey all. Got a buddy coming to visit in mid-March and is hell-bent on going deep sea fishing. From the archives, looks like Samana is better than Sosua/PP.....sounds good, we were going to head out that way anyways.

Is there deep sea fishing this time of year (with all the whaling going on :)), what would we be catching, and who is the king of all fisherman these days on the peninsula? We need someone to throw our money at but know that we will make it back in one piece, and have a decent chance of catching something...

Have you done it before Chief?

Marc,

I don't want to scare you off your fishing expidition but there is something I would like to share with you - my one and only Deep Sea Fishing trip in 1994.

Seven of us chartered a big (about 40 feet long) fishing vessel. It was all fun when it started. Yeah, this is life we all said, who needs to worry about tomorrow etc etc.

We each paid that time US$ 75.00 and it included all the Quisqueya beer you could drink and tropical fruit, the fishing equipment and bait. It would be a 5 hour trip.

After 45 minutes, one of us started puking, 46 minutes later two more, 48 minutes later 2 more (i was in this batch). Bloody diesel fumes from Dominicanized engines, one of them quit, the waves got bad, the boat rocked more than a rock star, more pucking, all the beer we had was left at sea, no one ate the tropical fruit.

The fishing....only one guy managed to cast a line and after two hours we voted to go back!

So if you have never done it and get sea sick...my advise...stay away for it as it will be a very bad day!

Ahhh...my heart bleeds for you. I get sea sick if I stay too long in the tub. My recent whale watching adventure in Samana turned into a whale "feeding" trip pretty fast. I have been sick in many of the world's oceans, numerous cars, and even some really good theme park rides :)

I will likely bow out of the activity myself, but would love to send him off to do some fishing if that's what he wants.

Thanks for the tips, I appreciate it. Now you see? Your $75 wasn't all wasted, you got to councel me!

Bad Timing

The water is still too cold at that time of year for good Offshore action.

However don't let someone else's mishap spoil your trip-the ones who get the sickest are the 'indoorsy' types.

Although it may be a bit rough during the January to March whale season, you can pick your weather for a good day offshore. So far this winter has been a pussycat with the winter ocean more like a summer sea. It's the calmest I've seen it in 6 years.

As far as the ocean temperature being too cold, I've raised a lot of fish (including sails and marlin) during whale watching season. I have noticed, however, that when the whales or the accompanying dolphin/porpoises move into an area, the other fish move out.

Several trolling boats operate out of Samana, Las Galeras and Las Terrenas. For more information you can contact me directly at comments@samana.net or have your buddy ask at his hotel.
