Jan, you'll find alot of stuff on this in the archives. I even recall a recipe being posted in the last two weeks or so.

    Default Jan, come now

...your thinly veiled attempt to cover up asking Chris for a date hasn't fooled anyone!

hehe. He is right, you have to check the archives. There is bark, leaves, and gecko parts (depending on the quality of the recipe) included in the bottle. Add misc combinations of rum, honey, wine, and presto....a drink I can barely muster the energy to swallow!

    fantastic stuff...,

    Cool

Now that everyone has danced all around your original question about the history of Mamajuana: My wife, a 16 year resident of Las Galeras in Samana, tells me that when she got here in 1986, she only found Mamajuana in Las Galeras and nowhere else on the island. It was truly a local medicine for the flu, "la Grippe," and the mixture contained bits of trees, roots, herbs and spices; the same recipe that is sold today by a local man in Las Galeras named "Negro." Rum and honey is the concoction's liquid elixir although a number of variations have emerged at various locations on the island.

Although primarily a "medicine" for the flu, many hucksters tout it's sexual powers to gullible tourists, "powers" that are no more evident than the relaxed feeling (and lowered inihibitions) one gets after a shot or two of alcohol.

    Hope this helps.

Well whatever is in it. I know my first experience buying it was great. Some little market, slipped on chicken gutts. The guy dusted off some bottle with half of some whisky label on it. He got a jug of black juice out...treated it like it was gold and poured some in the bottle..so slowly. Tehn he jammed it all down with a stick! .He handed me the bottle like it was a gift from the Gods. It was wonderful...warm and tasty. My dog Sniffy liked it also...and shes not a big drinker! jejeje...No matter what they say it does to you I like it. Sniffy and I will keep drinking it!
