Medical Career in the Dominican Republic

Hello to all of you out there.

I recently spent a year, as a college student from Texas, working in the Dominican Republic on a construction project. In that time I completely fell in love with the Dominican Republic; and ever since I left, I have been thinking of ways to return on a long term basis.

I have always had an interest in becoming a doctor but never really gave it much thought until now. I know from being in the D.R. that there are a few pretty good medical schools.

I was just wondering if its possible for an American to attend one of these schools and then practice medicine in the Dominican Republic. I really dont have any interest practiciing medicine in the U.S.

Could someone make a decent living doing this, and would an American be accepted without problems.

Any help or info would be greatly appreciated.
God Bless Ya'll, and as George Bush would say, "Don't mess with Texas"

Sincerely,
Randy

Unless you want to "buy" one of those degrees at one of the fly-by-night places in Santo Domingo, you had better get your head together.

In the first place, all the really good med schools only teach in Spanish.
In the second place there is a certain amount of competition to get into these better schools.
In the third place, medicine is a vocation first and a profession second. If you don't have the heart, you won't make it. At least not at the better schools.

If you can do the work, and graduate, you have to do one year of public service at starvation wages. Then, you had better get into a residency program of three to five years to become a specialist. If you don't, you will be a generalist, and they are a dime a dozen. Lots of them are selling insurance, driving taxis and selling cars.

Sure, after all of this, you can work here.
