Playa Grande Golf Course has 10 coastal holes
It is probably only a matter of time until the Playa Grande Golf Course located in the northeastern Cabrera area east of Puerto Plata is rated among the top golf courses in the Western Hemisphere.
In a recent Forbes Magazine feature, contributor Larry Olmsted explains the reason why the legendary Playa Grande Golf Course, designed by the late Robert Trent Jones and described as the “Pebble Beach of the Caribbean,” has gotten significantly better along lines of what rankers consider leading attributes.
The golf course was renovated last year by Rees Jones, son of the original designer and is now the only course in the Western Hemisphere with ten coastal holes. The golf course is part of the top luxury Amanera Resort, an Aman-operated property.
According to Aman Resorts CEO Olivier Jolivet, one of the major improvements happened when the original hotel that had been built in the middle of the golf course, and that affected the original routing, was removed. As reported in the Forbes feature, with the hotel gone, in the redesign Jones was able to replace “the few less than thrilling holes and then moved the inland fourteenth hole to the edge of the sea”. The course now has “a truly stunning five-hole cliff-top finish unrivalled in a sport where three consecutive oceanfront holes is considered excessive”.

From Santo Domingo to Barahona to Samana
Enjoy the photos and insights of writer Erin Brodwin on her recent trip to the Dominican Republic. The author spent 10 days flying in from New York City to Santo Domingo and then touring inland. Conclusions: food was delicious and inexpensive; people were kind; and she was left with a hankering to return and shared her recommendations to visit the Colonial City of Santo Domingo, Bahia las Aguilas in southwestern Pedernales, Casa Bonita and San Rafael in Barahona, Las Terrenas and Los Haitises National Park in the northeast, and Neptuno’s in Boca Chica.
