This one goes out to all those who have businesses outside of a mall or other secure areas.

What forms of security do you use and have they been effective in preventing theft/break-ins?

Any suggestions also welcome in this regard.

Metal roll down shutters for the doors and windows. Good locks and a pack of rabid Rottweilers inside.

Thanks C_G and Harleys. We're still looking for a location, but need to be ready for anything that might arise.

Mark I don't know what type of businessyou are looking to get into
but, consider the mall setting. I myself have about 8 months
contemplating the mall setting. Security built-in + Foot traffic
these 2 factors I feel give me a leg up (so to speak)

Yes Gio, we are certainly looking at the mall option.
The two factors you mentioned are the top two reasons
(security + increased traffic).

We have a fixed budget however and some malls are less desirable than others.
We are trying to weigh all the factors involved here and come up with the
best solution.

Yes we looked there very carefully.
Price-wise we could afford it, but we didn't find the overall feel of the mall to
be a good fit for our product.

We like the look/feel of Bella Vista Mall much better.
It just happens to be a lot more expensive though. :(

Security is a MUST where ever you are. Cameras, background check employees, metal slide-down doors with boxed locks on both sides, a Watchman and if possible Business / Real Estate insurance that covers theft specifically. I got robbed last
Saturday, those bastards took 400k worth of inventory because i failed to place such security measures up thinking "it will never happen to me"...

I'd be careful with Bella vista mall. When down town center is fully operational I would expect Bella Vista Mall to suffer a big drop in traffic. Just as happened with Acropolis when Blue Mall opened and with Blue Mall when Agora opened.

Sorry to hear about that Luis.
We'll be taking security very seriously.

Thanks Mauricio, is 'down town center' a specific area or mall?

The so called Downtown Centre a development of a mall and apartments is ongoing but the cinema complex at least apparently opened last Saturday. It is at the junction of Romulo Betancourt and Nunez de Caceres.......on the extreme left of the attached Google Earth map.

You will see it's position relative to Bella Vista Mall shown on the right of the map.

https://www.google.com.do/maps/@18.4518317,-69.9470177,667m/data=!3m1!1e3

My personal view is that Bella Vista Mall will not lose so many customers or than for the cinema complex, because it ideally serves the wealthier Dominicans and a few expatriates that live within a mile radius for banking and all other essential services. Plus it has the Nacional supermarket which many may prefer to Carrefour in Downtown Centre. Another factor is traffic for this local neighborhood. Travelling along and crossing Nunez between the tunnel under the park and 27th is an absolute mare.

To add, Bella Vista Mall has loads of security

Thanks for this info ju10.

I touched down in SD last Wed and took a taxi to my partners place.

I was quite surprised to discover that Downtown Center is just a couple of blocks
away from their pad.

We've been checking out possible locations for our store the past week.
Looking in Plaza Central, Bella Vista Mall and in various strip plazas.

We're leaning heavily towards Bella Vista Mall right now.
We could sign in the next day or two.
