It's been a terrible Olympics so far for the Dominican Republic after the incredible feat of Felix Sanchez winning the 400m hurdles in London last time around. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M99AfnmEXhU

In a little over an hour, Luisito Pie has a chance of at least a bronze if he can beat Rui Bragan?a of Portugal in the men's 58Kg Taekwondo.

Buena suerte Luisito!!

What wins medals, money or drugs?

It looks like money is winning at the moment. Look at team GB. They've really invested in the Olympics and it looks like their investment is paying off.

The drug nations like Russia and China are trailing the money teams.

I doubt team DR would ever be willing to invest big in these sporting events, which is shame coz there's plenty of talent here.

All Olympic Sports including Paralympic Sports have been supported by funding from the UK National Lottery for a number of years now, and the successes since Beijing through London and now Rio shows that such investment in sportsmen and women who would find it difficult to reach the high levels of performance needed without some form of sponsorship pays off.

Australia has started followed this example.

It is the peoples money from a national lottery being used very effectively and a source of national pride with a country of 60 million punching way above its size.

With all the lotteries in DR why can't some of those profits be used similarly to support DR sport?
