Medina returns to Hondo Valle with forestry plan
President Danilo Medina visited the southwestern border province of El?as Pi?a over the weekend and expressed alarm at the large-scale deforestation that has been spreading from tree-less Haiti. During his visit, he announced a project in Hondo Valle with an injection of funds for reforestation in the area and new job creation.

?As of now, anyone who deforests is going to jail,? he said, as quoted in the Presidency press release on the Sunday, 28 August 2016 visit to the border area. He stressed that there would be consequences for illegal tree cutting.

The President?s visit to Hondo Valle follows on from his previous visit on 3 July when he flew over the area and became aware of the significant deforestation.

A task force with Minister of Agriculture Angel Estevez, Dominican Agrarian Institute director Emilio Toribio, Banco Agr?cola director Carlos Segura Foster, senator Adriano Sanchez Roa, the provincial governor, and members of the Cooperativa Agropecuaria Amor por la Vida and the Hondo Valle irrigation association was created to prepare a reforestation plan that includes planting timber forestry, coffee and avocados. ?If we don?t stop this now, in five, six or ten years, everyone will have to leave,? said Medina after seeing the deforestation. ?It is sad how the mountains have been destroyed. We have to change this. We need to provide the necessary support.?

As part of the project, the President returned to Hondo Valle to explain plans for 90,000 tareas to be planted at a cost of more than RD$700 million.

Hondo Valle has a cool microclimate similar to Constanza and Jarabacoa.

Hatuey de Camps passes away
President Danilo Medina called a national day of morning following the death of former deputy Hatuey de Camps on Friday, 26 August 2016 at the age of 69. He had been suffering from colon cancer for 10 years. Coincidentally, his youngest brother Luis had a heart attack and passed away the following day.

De Camps was minister of the Presidency during the President Salvador Jorge Blanco government from 1982-1986.

He was elected deputy on the PRD ticket to the Chamber of Deputies of which he was the president from 1979 to 1982.

De Camps ran for President on the Partido Revolucionario Social Dem?crata (PRSD) ticket in the May 2016 general elections. He had founded the PRSD after being expelled from the PRD by former President Hipolito Mejia after he opposed Mejia?s decision to change the Constitution so the later could run for re-election in 2004.

De Camps was regarded as a leading opponent of presidential re-election. In keeping with his principle of rejecting consecutive re-election, De Camps ran for President in the 2016 general election of 15 May 2016 and received 8,264 votes or 0.18% of the total vote.

During the campaign, he criticized the opposition for failing to unite against President Danilo Medina?s re-election ambitions. It was the vote of the opposition party, the PRD that allowed the ruling PLD to change the 2010 Constitution so that Medina could run for President again.

His biography published in Wikipedia mentions that his first marriage was to actress and singer Cecilia Garcia, with whom he had two sons: Hatuey and Luis Miguel de Camps Garc?a. They divorced and he then married TV host Milagros German with whom he had three children: Milagros Marina, ?lvaro Hatuey and Andreas Salom? de Camps Germ?n.

His third marriage was to Dominique Bl?hdorn Le Marrec, daughter of the founder of Gulf & Western, the developer of Casa de Campo and Altos de Chavon in the Dominican Republic. They had four children, including triplets.

De Camps was buried in the Puerta del Cielo cemetery on Sunday 28 August 2016.

Highly profitable pension plan companies
Pension plan management companies have an annual average yield of 38.5%, but retirees will be lucky to see 10.7% on their savings, reports Diario Libre.

The law authorizes the pension management companies (AFP) to charge a 0.5% commission on covered wages, and a 25% commission on the margin between the interest on the certificates of deposits of banking and the yield of the bonds negotiated on the secondary securities market. The pension funds are invested in these funds. A bill aimed at reducing the commission has failed to pass in Congress. More than 1.6 million employees are included in the pension plans.
