Legislator warns of risks of Gold Quest mining in southwest
Deputy Fidelio Despradel (Al Pa?s-National District) has expressed his concern about plans for a series of mega-mining ventures in the southwestern provinces of San Juan de la Maguana, El?as Pi?a and Azua. In a letter to the Ministry of Energy and Mines, he said this would lead to a natural, social and economic disaster for the area. Despradel said that the conditions for the extraction of metals in the Yaque del Sur River area did not exist without putting at risk the little water that is available for human consumption.*

He said that mining poses a threat to the development of farming in the area from Padre de las Casas to El?as Pi?a. The deputy criticized the government for granting several exploratory concessions in the area, which he said would threaten the economy of San Juan de la Maguana and Barahona and social stability in the region and the country.*

In the letter addressed to Minister of Energy and Mines Antonio Isa Conde, Despradel rejects the minister’s assurance that these companies would be extracting gold and other metals without causing any damage to the environment and local communities. “Mega mining is an infernal process, whether open sky or with underground tunnels,” he stated. He says that these processes always need a large volume of water and areas for dumping the waste, which is always highly polluting.*

Despradel made his observations after visiting the site of the project that Gold Quest plans to develop in San Juan de la Maguana.*

Despradel called on Congress to pass a new mining law that is more in harmony with the country’s interests and adapted to its geographical and environmental conditions. He added that the mining contracts that have been signed by the government must be reviewed and parameters established to ensure that the new projects guaranteed the country’s economic, social and environmental interests and its sovereignty.*

Haitian exodus to the DR
According to preliminary reports, more than 800 people were killed after Hurricane Matthew devastated the south of Haiti. As aid is being sent in to help the victims, the pressure on the border with the Dominican Republic has also begun as large numbers of Haitians seek to cross. The military forces are finding it a challenge to completely control the border.*

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Health declared the Dominican-Haitian border on epidemiological alert. Manase Pe?a, former president of the Dominican Medical Association in the northern region, told Listin Diario that flooding anywhere in the world may lead to the spread of infectious diseases such as cholera, malaria, leptospirosis, dengue and chikungunya, along with respiratory and skin problems. Pe?a said that cholera was under control in Haiti, but the flooding may cause a renewed outbreak.*

He said that after losing their humble dwellings, many Haitians would try to migrate and others would travel in search of medical assistance but would end up staying in the country.*

Members of the army and the specialized border corps (Cesfront) report that they are returning large numbers of Haitians trying to cross the border illegally.*

Several would-be migrants were quoted as saying that they wanted to settle in the DR because they have no social protection in Haiti.*
