As morbid as it is, I get it. My husband's paternal grandmother lived in Santo Domingo, but she was a campesina from el Cibao at heart. The first time I met her, she was in her 90s, living alone in the capital. I was more than a little surprised to see a coffin in her bedroom corner, standing on end. She was very proud of the fact that she had purchased everything for her funeral already.

Our son was born on her 100th birthday, and the precise day that we landed in SD 5 months later she died. She was at home, waiting to meet this new great-grandchild with her birthday. The funeral was in her house, definitely a first for me, in that casket I had seen years before.
