...the murder of the Mirabal sisters marked the beginning of the end of the reign of terror of Rafael Trujillo.

Their brutal deaths were the fuel for the citizenry to rise up and end Trujillo's dictatorship.

Let us not forget.

If you've not visited the Mirabal Museum in Salcedo, you really should. It's a national monument.

Yes, it's in my hometown. Even though some people do not appreciate the Mirabal Sisters' legacy, most do.

There were three. I believe he targeted one of them, and she refused his advances, and whole family suffered*

Not quite that simple. The Mirabals and their husbands were socialists, and thus politically enemies of Trujillo as well. Minerva was the only one he had made sexual advances on. Trujillo also murdered several other family members.

My understanding is that el jefe wanted to married one of them but his wishes weren't materialized?

The movie Butterflies was a fairly accurate depiction of the plight of the Mirabal sisters. In the movie, he wanted to bed one sister. She resisted and got involved in a political movement to end his reign of terror.

I met the author a few times in VT. Good book, but I didn't care for the movie much, which is more from the sisters's perspective. Good read if you want to practice another language. I think it was written in English, but has been translated into Spanish. I have a copy back in the states I need to bring down.

I remember seeing the half peso coin over 20 years ago and wondering who they were.

Trujillo liked 13 year olds.

It was the Mirabel sisters and his trying to kill another head of state that led to the CIA aiding in his assassination. Massacreing over 10,000 Haitians only led to sanctions.

I wonder how much truth there's in the story of Trujillo wanting to get in with one of the sisters and she rebuffing him...I think their death had to do with the fact that they and their husbands were involved in 'subversive activities' trying to topple the regime.
