Trending "bigly" on social media this week is the SD West mayor's purchase of a model of the Eiffel Tower, which used to stand outside the Hispaniola hotel's casino. He says he paid half a million pesos for the item and has placed it in Plaza de la Bandera as a Christmas decoration.

Hilarity ensued when he was quoted as saying that as he is neither a historian nor an anthropologist he didn't know which country the tower came from:

?Yo no s? si es Eiffel, si es de Francia, o de d?nde es, lo que s? es que vi esa estructura en el hotel Hispaniola y el hotel nos la propuso de una manera barata?,

Memes immediately appeared on social media with other world famous monuments like the statue of Liberty superimposed on Santo Domingo city scenes.

People started asking whether we now needed a Schengen visa to cross Luper?n avenue, and one commentator remarked that now we have the Eiffel Tower we should also have a guillotine.

Tour Eiffel in Santo Domingo
The Tuesday, 28 November 2016 edition of El D?a reports on the construction of the high-standing Tour Eiffel saying that it ?steals the show? from the Plaza de la Bandera flag monument in the nearby rotunda.
According to reports, the metal structure is a project being implemented by the Santo Domingo West municipality, under Mayor Francisco Pe?a, who was re-elected in the 2016 general election. El D?a says that Santo Domingo?s Tour Eiffel will be lit up for the holidays, and will remain as a permanent fixture in Santo Domingo West. The mayor was not available for comment on the structure and its cost.
