Lowest rank (raso) 6000-7000 pesos. When I realize that I don't feel that bad when I had to give them 200 pesos to be on my way.

its ridiculous to pay this low a figure and expect them to do the same job a cop getting a proper salary would ...but then again how do you expect a country to pay a reasonable salary to the cops ...when all the politicians are grabbing from the pot first

In 2016 they were talking about raising them 100%, they ofcourse never did. For 2017 a 30% raise is in the budget, however to be applied based on performance. Probably easier to give it to who they want.

The 6000 is correct. And if you are a woman police officer at entry level, bring that down to $5000. A month.

Those amounts are paid monthly. Not like most employees here in the Dominican Republic who are paid "quincenal", or rather bimonthly (15/30). Under the Mejia presidency, they were paid every two weeks, but not now. Also, with those peso amounts, necessary deductions are also made due to dependents for items such as health benefits/seguros. You could calculate deductions, just like any other country: A single person; Married no children; Married with children. A married father of four, has a nice chunk coming out of those paychecks. There is also no provision that pays female members less. This is false. All of this information is provided to me by an active high ranking member of the PN, who I have known for 10 years, and just had coffee with.

I know that this will cause some to go nuts. Remember that we are long time private home owners with a rather large place. As the years have passed we, and many others, have had to upgrade our own security.

We, as others, went through the normal pre and after Christmas increase in security problems. Having done this for several years it is not new but this year was more attempted intrusions then in the past. In part do to lots of construction near us. We actually had a "tip" that we would be hit one night and had reinforced and a shotgun was indeed a very good deterrent.

We have had 3 PN that have stopped by once a week or so for over 3 years. We have their phone numbers and they have responded rather quickly as they have in the past.

Being tired of this "shyt", we offered them a free 1 bedroom apt fully furnished with full kitchen with elec., water, cable TV, and internet that is on our property. They moved in in less then 3 hours.

They lived in a barracks with several others on cots. 1 bathroom/shower. No kitchen. Maybe a TV. No privacy. No personal time/area. Since the shifts change constantly the people coming and going must have been a very difficult living situation.

Right after they moved in, someone was trying to come over our back wall and they where sitting in an area a saw this. Imagine being the intruder and having 3 guns drawn and pointed at you. They said that the intruder was so surprised that the PN broke down laughing and had no reason to shoot........... the intruder was gone.

My wife and I keep and arms distance still and we have rules that they have respected... but these guys are happy. They are in a much better living place. We are too.

You don't feel that bad?
These little rat bastards (the one's who are always asking for money) knew exactly what they
were getting into when they signed up for this gig. I'll be damned if this is supposed
to be an excuse... its inexcusable.

Good luck just pay them and you will have a friend for life and also police escorts to where you are going.....
That's the exact mentality that causes the problem to not only exist, but persevere. There are some measures the PN is taking. Enough, of course not. I/we weren't born yesterday, but tourists/ex-pats need to stop being so willing to fork over the 100 pesos here/100 pesos there......or more.

Looking for a career change? ;)

They all moonlight on the side, lower ranks probably pull in double their wages while. For high ranks the sky is the limit.
Well, good luck if you are a police woman. NOBODY is hiring a woman -- however skilled, experienced -- for those "side" jobs. Fugeddiboudit.

When I try to tell my Dominican friends that being on the police force is a major coup in the US, with tremendous respect, and financial security and pensions, etc., they look at me and think (once again) "Esta gringa debe estar loca!"
