A mythical and romantic name
In principle the name for the new team could not be decided, because there was not a word of five letters that liked the founders. It was thought of "Ideal", which has the five letters required to decorate what would be the brand new uniform, but the name was not liked by most.

Days later Francisco (Pancho) Fiallo, brother of Luis Fiallo, who resided in Moca, suggested the name Licey, arguing that there was a stream between La Vega and Moca, that when it rained a lot it overflowed making difficult its crossing, thus constituting a danger to Those who tried to cross it on horseback, a way of traveling during those initial years of the twentieth century.

The peaceful Licey running through the woods looked picturesque, but when their waters swelled in the rains and torrenteras, they became brave and respectable. In the almost ecological proposition of the name for Fiallo, it was later said that it influenced the personal fact that Pancho Fiallo had an affair with a Cibaña girl that made him take care of the place.

If this were so (and now we enter into poetic mythology and romance) it would then be the emergence of the name Licey, a kind of imitation of old loves mixed with the landscape, fresh and calm water sometimes driven by the gale and The rain that swelled the veins of the brook.

No frame so attractive and beautiful to choose the mythical name of a baseball team. Perhaps we can, one day, build the complete and almost metaphorical mythology of the baseball team of greatest success in the life of the Dominican people.

Some say that the word Licey is of indigenous origin and means "brave and daring man", but nothing proves it, although brave and daring have been the multiple battles of "The Glorious" when overflowed has given much "drinking water" to his contenders.

It is worth noting that neither the blue nor the nickname of Tigers arose in that time of 1907, since the first uniform used by the Licey was of gray kaki and the second of the yellow kaki, for which for several years the team members were Called "the yellow ones". It would be 1910 when the first white-cream uniform was imported, with white and red stockings.

The uniform was different from the others for being striped with a very fine blue lists and with the viscera of the cap of the same color. Then it began to be called "the blue team" and by the stripes was nicknamed the Tigers, thereby giving rise to the aggressiveness that was supposed in a team with these "fierce" characteristics.

Back in the early days of our baseball, the Tigers' play was surrounded only by barbed wire, and the crowd settled on both sides of the field to watch the games.

From 1907 to 1909, Licey had as only rivals to the teams "Ozama" and "Nuevo Club", the latter the most dangerous of the two, with orders by the unforgettable teacher Lulú Pérez, teacher who taught the secrets of "pitching" to Enrique Hernandez, known as "Indian Bravo", immortal baseball, who is said to have been the best pitcher of the Dominican Republic in those days. The Indian pitched a curve of such a nature that it was physically impossible for the sluggers to connect it.

Hence, every time Hernandez was placed on the mound, he could ensure the triumph of his colors. They called him with the nickname of the "Brave Indian", because of its distinctively mestizo color and lace mane. Later the Indian entered the liceístas ranks and naturally the blues benefited with that magnificent acquisition, while they took off their most dangerous enemy.

The documentation on this period is poor, and it is worth noting that the encounters between Licey and the few rivals of the time were more than sporadic. It was then an amateur baseball, with nobles integrable according to timelines of opportunity.

In 1909, a large part of the initial players of the Licey had disappeared, being attributed the change of faces to the influence of Enrique Hernandez, whose terrible ball was wreaking havoc on the blue side, forcing the team to continually renew its players in an effort to defeat the "New Club.

In 1909-1910 Totoño Hernandez went on to play third base, alternating in that position with Pichin Mueses and Arturo Paz, who also worked as pitcher; Julito de la Rocha would occupy the initial; Vicente Pichardo the second pad and Herófilo Maggiolo (uncle of the former volleyball player and immortal Alicia Cruzado Maggiolo and the Dominican writer Marcio Veloz Maggiolo), occupied a position in the gardens.

It was Maggiolo the longest hitter of those years. He was the most powerful slugger, as we say today. During those years a phrase related by the power of this batter was coined. When it came to giving relevance that fell into the exaggeration was said: "neither the bout of Maggiolo", referring to one of the staccato of this player

From 1909 to 1912, the most brilliant figures in the blue flock were Pindu Miranda, both in the woods and in the bate; Tulio H. Pina from the mound and Arturo Paz on the defensive and offensive. Luis Castillo was the manager and treasurer of the club, while Federico Fiallo, then high ranking military during the dictatorship of Trujillo was the captain and another of the team's star pitchers.

The first series registered in Santo Domingo between first team was celebrated enters Gimnasio Escolar and Licey edited to three meetings and gained by the first by two games in favor in 1911.

Licey traveled to San Pedro de Macoris, to the lands of the Miramar against the equipment Macorís to whom it defeated 11-8 in the month of November of 1911. To close the year, in December was realized the first encounter against the New Club, winning this Set at the start of the first major rivalry of local baseball.

Ignacio Guerra, president of the National Baseball League sponsored a tournament from August 1912 to February 1913, between New Club, Ozama and Licey, but for the last month of the season Licey hired players imported from Cuba and Puerto Rico and the rest Of the teams claimed they were professionals. New Club retired and finished the tournament.

Concluded this tournament continued the clashes between the New Club, Nashville and Licey. In September after many Licey-Nuevo Club discussions played a series to eleven shocks in the Gymnasium School, being tieings to nine by side. Licey was reinforced with Cubans and Puerto Ricans.

Already later, and quite possibly by 1913, wooden stands had been installed from where the fans could see the games standing. Only the directives of the Licey and the "New Club" had boxes.

For the good night of 1913, the managers of the Licey raffled a house of the club located in the street the Conde, to be able to construct the Licey Park (today park Enriquillo), inaugurated the 4 of October of 1914 in Villa Francisca with the presence of the Doctor Ramón Báez, president of the republic and who made the launch of the first ball in play against the New Club.

In March 1914, Licey played a match in Barahona against Independence.

The first series played at Licey Park was held in October, won by the Tigers in five games; A second series involved Legalistas to eleven finds won by the Licey with a 6-2 record.

Several series were played in the remaining months of the year between New Club, Licey, Washington, Weeling, Petrel and Nashville, teams of the American Navy that prowled territorial waters as a prelude to the 1916 invasion.

In July of 1915 New Club wins a series to the Licey, causing a crisis between the teams of first division of the Dominican capital and at the end of year the newspapers published the bases of a contest to transfer the Licey Park, located in Villa Francisca to Gymnasium School.

From 1916 to 1917, Pedro Miguel Caratini, a young and intelligent defender of the short field and consistent hitter, came to the country in the ranks of the Ponce team during a sporting exchange.

New Club played their last match by beating Licey 14-7 on January 4, 1917 at Licey Park, leaving Columbia, San Carlos and Licey on stage. Without much organization they played with the USMC team of the American Navy.

At the end of the year, as the Marines always beat Licey and San Carlos, the Creoles formed a team called Estrellas Dominicana, with the best players of the time, defeating the American sailors in the three games that were the faces.

The meetings continued in the School Gymnasium between San Carlos, Licey, USMC and a selection made up of the best creoles in 1918.

In December, the Licey's leadership reorganized the team, with Ángel Miéses Lajara, Virgilio Abreu as vice-president and Fernand A. Miranda (Pindú) being named manager.

Dominicans and sea guards played the national dignity in 1919, since it was the only land that the Creoles could win and defeat the intervenors.

In 1920, the local teams had difficulties to overcome the Licey. Piriota Andreu, right pitcher and Red Gugú Selig played top-quality baseball. In May Licey-San Carlos played a charity series to seven games, won by Licey 4-1.

The Lions of Ponce clashed with San Carlos, Licey and the Dominican Stars, the Puerto Ricans won the series to the local teams. In December Licey traveled to Bani and La Romana, expanding baseball to the rest of the nation.

On Thursday, February 17, 1921, the team of the Chosen One was formed, which would become the strongest rival of the Licey Blues. The New Club was one of the novenas that gave more to the Tiger, but it ceased to exist in 1917; Also the San Carlos battled with the feline.

The chief executive of the Licey, Don Geo Pou, was the person who proposed that the new team be named Chosen, as it contained players of various combinations. The Reds looked for players from clubs such as Los Muchachos, San Carlos and Delco Light, teams of the time.

In other words, in pursuit of a select combination to face the Licey, it is this one, which indirectly helps proclaim the name of the club that emerged in 1921 and with which it would maintain a constant struggle over the years. Hence tradition would baptize the Licey and the Chosen as "the eternal rivals."

The first series between Blues and Reds, was a tie to 9 games. In the second race, the Tigers beat their opponents in 7 games. Then in that same 1921 the indigo team defeated the USMC team in 7 meetings and the "Restoration" in 4 challenges.

That same year, the Tigers transposed the mountains of the Cibao, to be the first captain team to play in that region. That happened in August when the blues led by captain Caratini won five games in Santiago and three in La Vega.

Ironically is the name of a town part of the Santiago province home of their rival las Aguilas. Even the name of the Capitol's favorite team has Cibaeno origins.
