from the article:

Similar in Santo Domingo. We were behind a bus filled with Haitians just off the Plaza de las Bandaras. All the Haitian street peddlers ran over to it at red light, handing those in the bus food and drink.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say most, if not all of them were working illegally when picked up.

Hmm... Bavaro-Punta Cana has around 70,000 (could be more), and for quite a few years it has been estimated that about half are foreigners, most illegals.

So, lets see...

30 captured...

At least 25,000 left behind in Bavaro-Punta Cana alone.

A serious operation should had caught hundreds in one day.

Lord have mercy!

What evidence have you that half, of what , are foreigners and most illegal - My guess is absolutely zero . The three hotels that I know very well employ no one without proper documentation . In most of the large hotels security is quite tight and employees need a special pass that is only gained when a prospective employee has proper documentation. There are, however, small enterprises in the area who probably do employ anyone regardless of documentation. I personally applaud any effort to make everyone in this country have proper documentation ..

Did anyone notice the "undocumented" Venezuelans in the pick up truck (hiding their faces) with the Immigration Officer explaining the situation while the Haitians were on the bus? Where is the outrage?

The officer said that this round up would be a daily event. I guess they have only one bus assigned for this region?

I see them about once a week...usually Avenida Espana, rounding up the Haitian workers (construction). I never see them "looking" at id's, just rounding up a bus load and off they go. Who is to say how many are undocumented...they do not get a choice, but be tossed in the bus. Every once and awhile I see a moto concho driver picked up, but the vast majority are construction workers. Without them...legal or not...I am not certain how anything will get built here. My qualified Dominican contractor, has taken well over 45 days to complete a 3 day project...and still only on what should be day 2. Always an excuse.

It was a few years ago that I read it, but now that I re-read the article I have to be make the following corrections:

At the minimum, there are 60,000 people in the area and at least 35,000 are illegals. Again, keep in mind these estimates are from 2008.

http://hoy.com.do/haitianos-inundan-zona-de-bavaro-punta-cana/

The migration officer in the video posted in the OP did say they caught a lot of illegals with false documents. I guess they were using those false documents to comply with regulation and that way get a job.

The so called outrage, that the Venezuelans are in the air-conditioned pickup truck while the Haitians are on the hot yellow bus.

Oh,,,,,,,,,, would all the Haitians fit in the pickup? If not should they have made a phone call for more pickups? I just didn't see it that way. Either way they all are getting hauled off somewhere where I doubt either group will have A/C.

True that the are all being hauled off and potentially deported, but special treatment was given to the Venezuelans as in no big hot yellow bus along with the others from this island.

I didn't look at it that way, still don't. I see it as Haitians one vehicle, Venezuelans another vehicle. Possible reason they may get processed at different locations. Certainly no reason for outrage.

Maybe next time they can put all the names in a hat to select who rides in special privilege A/C comfort.

Why are they deporting Serbians? They are a drop in the bucket, we ALL know who should be deported and the massive numbers that they currently hold should make them a priority, no racism in that.

There is a real crisis in Venezuela. They should receive due deference as a result of that. They are REAL refugees and migrants as opposed to the fake-pseudo refugees from the western side of the island who have been limping from tragedy to tragedy for centuries and it will never change. Therefore I hope the DR government does the right thing and deports at least a million of the current 2.

Is it really any different from the way the two arrived to the DR?

The Venezuelans become illegals after the tourist card expires, the Haitians the moment they cross the border (in very hot public transport or hidden in the back of trucks or simply walking in the sun and heat).

Come on folks...

Remember the SUV caught a couple of years ago?

Here's a reminder:

I don't remember any outrage when this was first presented in DR1 at the conditions the Haitians entered the DR.

The Venezuelans are not arriving in those conditions, that's a guarantee.

Could Venezuelans claim Asylum in the DR? I guess if one is a known opposition leader who had been persecuted politically, he would very likely qualify for Asylum, but would a regular Venezuelan be able to claim Asylum upon entering the DR (at the airport)?

There
have been several articles exactly on this point . I do not think the DR government would grant asylum when they are at present trying to broker a peace . The DR government did nothing when Chavez was wrecking the country and have tended to be a little left wing friendly in various disputes , as in Honduras and one other socialist south American country , I forget which, where a leader was warmly welcomed here .

The DR government should deport anyone who is not in the country legally in order to not be accused of "prejudice and racial profiling" by the liberal left around the world.
