what it must be like to do a year in a Dominican jail? This country has a bail system, no? Seems like really big time offenders were on bail in the past. Lose a year of your life. You would think that returning to the DR indicates an innocent mind. A guilty guy would have never come back.
American freed after a year in jail on drugs charges
A man from Houston, Texas, who has been held in jail in the Dominican Republic for more than a year, has been found not guilty of drug smuggling charges and is expected to be released sometime in the next 48 hours.

Larry Davis was accused of helping smuggle drugs into the country aboard the ship "The Precon Express 1." He was held in Najayo prison awaiting trial on narcotics charges facing up to 20 years in prison.

A three-judge panel found him not guilty but the court is now waiting to see if the Dominican Republic government will appeal the verdict although that is not thought to be likely.

Davis said he and his father had leased the ship to another company. He said he received a call from the lessee telling him there was an inspection issue and at that time there was no mention of drugs.

According to Davis, he flew to the Dominican Republic, only to find out about the large shipment of drugs found on board. He was arrested and jailed despite declaring his innocence.

Something like this is a life changing experience. This guy would have never come back to the DR if he was in any way guilty. Agree with mofongo, the finances of the arrest and trial must be staggering. If he was guilty he would have just sent someone to check out the circumstance before ever coming back. Guilty people know they are guilty and behave like guilty people. No presumption of innocence down here. More like a presumption of guilt and you prove your innocence while in prison.

If that was the business he was in and his crew said they needed him at this end to handle things, yes he probably would have answered their plea. I would guess that his people were coerced by the arresting authorities to implicate the "higher ups."
And they made up something and he responded like a business owner would do.

Ok. Its his boat. I read the news articles. Clear as mud. Was he caught red handed aboard the boat with the drugs? I see he left the DR then came back. Why? Did the authorities convince the crew to lure the guy back here? I am reluctant to believe the crew guys. When you are facing serious time people will say anything. So he is in jail for one year, four months and the crew gets 5 years and he is set free. Large shipments like this are usually flown in. Unusual circumstance. Why did the guy walk?

In the DR it is arrest someone and then ask questions later. This story sounds a little shady. Reading between the lines they lease this boat to another party to be taken to the DR. Where was the point of origination? Who are these people you are leasing to? Why are they going to the DR, which is not overly friendly to boaters? It sounds like the people who leased the boat claimed that the drugs were not theirs? You would think possesion of the drugs by the party leasing the boat would be more than sufficient to arrest them? What happened to them? More questions than answers?
