I understand the sweep happened yesterday. Did it happen again today?

There is going to be more outcry around the world about this highly targeted profiling and deportation of illegal aliens from the DR.

My understanding is that it began yesterday, and is ongoing today.

Although it's ongoing, today they had a sweep around the country

http://elnacional.com.do/fa-y-migracion-inician-batida-contra-haitianos-ilegales/

The DR gov made a half ass attempt to regularize the status of Haitians here illegally. Their residency plan did nothig to make it quick and easy for Haitians who could not get the proper documentation from their home country and be able to file for residency in the DR. This plan was an excuse to do what is happening now. Round up illegals and send them back to their home country. Most of the Haitians illegally in the DR can't afford the residency process. It is a catch 22 for them. Their home government could care less about their welfare and the DR gov has no legal responsibility for them. Unless the DR does a better job keeping out illegals from Haiti or Venezula or anywhere else than this problem will get worse . The DR gov doesn't seem to want to stop the flow. They would rather round people up and send them off. Their residency plan for illegal Haitians was doomed to fail and this is the result. Typical of the DR gov, a half ass plan with the same results.

It´s a fairly common scene in Santiago.

I see it quite often, a police pickup truck, sometimes the long one as seen in AE´s link, with Haitians in the back.

Watched a few times as Haitians took off running and hiding as the police pickup trunk comes down the road.

Have not seen any resist or run once they are targeted.
Which is probably a good thing for their well being.

All of these migrants get into the country and disperse throughout with relative ease. I have to agree that apart from a token effort at some border crossings, the ability to enter undocumented into the DR and remain for long periods of time seems to be institutional by design.

Most of the formal immigration processes here and the documentary requirements seem overly complicated on their face, but compared to the requirements and time needed for processing in NA, the DR seems to be rather quick and minimalist in nature. It goes without saying that anyone applying to reside in a new country must expect that they will need to establish who they are and their ability to support themselves.

The DR is sufficiently developed to be in a position to greatly reduce the influx of migrants at or near the border if they choose to do so.

From what I remember reading, that's not really a fair assessment of what the DR did. Under the foreigner naturlization and regularization program, many Haitians were either naturalized or given permanent residency and many were "regularized" giving them one year, which was extended last year(not sure where that stands now)to get all the required documents. I think the biggest stumbling block was the lack of a passport, but that's was Haiti's fault - not the DR's. You just can't be giving out residency to undocumented people that can't even prove who they are.

As far as costs go, on another thread there were many that applied under that plan that are now receiving their cedulas for free.

Every country has a right to protect its sovereignty, as distasteful as it may seem they have a right to do it as they see fit.

If you have entered a country illegally or have overstayed your visa, your only expectation should be that someday you will be deported.

The regularization plan was to placate international outcry to the deportations. Now they can get back to doing what they wanted to do.

1,406 Haitians have been detained in the past 48 hours:

computer translated:

Arrests raid after undocumented Haitians

Some 1,406 Haitians have been detained in the last 48 hours during the operations carried out by the Armed Forces and the General Directorate of Migration to stop the presence of undocumented people in Dominican territory.

According to data from the Migration Directorate, 942 of the foreigners were arrested by the Specialized Border Security Corps (Cesfront), in Dajabón, Mao, Montecristi and other demarcations.

The remaining 464 were detained by Migration in the National District, the provinces of Santo Domingo, Santiago, Higuey, La Romana and other populations with great economic activity.

The agency warned that the operations will continue in the national territory, to guarantee national sovereignty, as ordered by the Constitution of the Republic.
The massive presence of Haitians in the neighborhoods of the capital and Santo Domingo Este motivated the migration case to become a topic of debate in the media.

Critics of the massive presence of illegal immigrants provoked the reaction of Defense Minister Lieutenant General Rubén Darío Paulino Sem, who said that the border is controlled by more than 4,500 troops in the provinces of Elías Piña and Dajabón.

The statements of the military chief provoked criticism from lawmakers and organizations, who believe that the entry of illegal people constitutes a real threat to national sovereignty.

Some of the foreigners arrested claim that they paid up to five pesos to enter Dominican territory, where they come stalked by the famine they spend in their country.
While others allege that the military violates their rights, since they are taken even though they have the documents that accredit them as residents in the country.

Yesterday, the head of the Dominican Army, Maj. Gen. Braulio Alcántara López, ordered changes to the commanders of the border, after the complaint about the massive entry of Haitians into Dominican territory.

Complaints about the presence of undocumented Haitians are due to the displacement of Dominicans in commerce and the informal economy, in addition to their bad habits of coexistence.

The government invested about 50 million dollars to legalize the status of 286,000 Haitians living in the country as undocumented, but after approving that amnesty increased the presence of foreigners on Dominican streets.
The number of undocumented immigrants in large cities is increasing, where they are engaged in the construction, sale of clothes and other goods, as well as asking for money in the streets.

They also work in agricultural plantations and in the main tourist centers located in Higuey, La Romana, Juan Dolio, Puerto Plata, Boca Chica and Samaná.
There are already many in the transportation of passengers on the different routes of the National District, the province of Santo Domingo and Santiago de los Caballeros.

All that being said, there are those who are claiming that all of this is being done to put up a smokescreen to divert attention away from Oberbrecht scandal.

Santiago's mayor held a press conference showing how the regularization cards have been falsified. They captured many Haitians showing regularization cards with all having the same exact identity number and some even without it. They all swore they were legal and have been in the country for decades, and that their cards are legitimate; of course.

Falsified cedulas, passports, regularization cards; everything.

After seeing this with his own eyes, he's now much less lenient on the subject.

insearch the Internet on this topic. I haven't seen the hue and cry as when the "rendering Haitians stateless" got tossed around by everybody. For a minute and a half. I heard that briefly in NYC one could ge invited to the BEST parties and eat the most colossal shrimp.  A provisional and time limited offer at best. However, it is reliably reported that the shrimp were actually colossal and quite well seasoned. This was reliably reported to me by the most conservative family values oriented leaders of Dominican democracy. Almost as good as the shrimp served at Wally Brewster's soirées.

And, and bye, how many people on the forum today can name the replacement to Wally Brewster.

Sorry winde, more feigned outrage. Oh, that's sorry, as in not sorry.

According to this article, over 200 detained since 5 am today in Bavaro:

computer translated

More than 200 undocumented Haitians have been arrested since 5:00 am when elite Army, National Police and Migration troops raided neighborhoods and communities here, Veron and Punta, where they occupied firearms and drugs.

The authorities found resistance in El Hoyo de Friusa and Verón, where the Haitian presence is more noticeable.

The prisoners are transported in buses to the police barracks of Bávaro and Verón, where they are cleaned.

In Friusa, undocumented people got involved with the military and police forces that carry out the largest operation in the tourist area against the Haitian presence.

And in retaliation, Haitians are preventing Dominicans from entering Haiti to work [computer translated]

Haitians impede the passage of Dominicans

Haitian enraged yesterday prevented Dominicans who do plumbing, masonry, electricity, mechanics and others, enter their country, in retaliation for the restrictions imposed by Dominican authorities on their compatriots who do not have documents.

Tension increased when gunshots were heard and immediately the Specialized Border Security Corps (Cesfront), ordered the reinforcement of surveillance in the area.

The Haitians shouted that if the Dominican authorities do not allow the entry into their country of their compatriots who work in the Dominican territory and who enter and leave the country, they will not allow the Dominicans to enter theirs.

On the Haitian border, members of the National Police of that country were sent, who only observed the protests of the Haitians.

Yesterday again dozens of undocumented Haitians working in construction, agriculture, commercial establishments and family homes were pressing at the border gate so that Cesfront officials and immigration inspectors allowed them to enter Dominican territory to fulfill their responsibilities.

The presence at the border crossing of Dominican employers and employers who worked with the authorities to facilitate the entry of their Haitian employees even though they did not have legal documents was also well-known.

The director of the Cesfront, Sugar Frugis Martínez, told the Diario List that the problem is that these Haitians do not have legal documents and that therefore they are not admitted by Migration and that if they manage to enter this territory when they are detected by the soldiers Are apprehended and returned to their nation.

"Our mission is that anyone who is not legal to take him and deliver him to Migration and that body is the one that determines whether or not to admit it in the country," said the military chief.

Frugis Martinez said that the soldiers stationed at the border are acting with drasticity to stop the entry of Haitians into the country, and that each area is reinforced more.

From Monday until yesterday more than 800 undocumented Haitians have been returned to their country by being caught crossing the border and others while hiding in the mountains, abandoned houses and lots, lots and other places.

Interior and Police exhorts
The Ministry of Interior and Police exhorted yesterday to foreigners that during the regularization plan received their license and Striker that must proceed to renew because the term expires next Monday.

This was reported by Luis Fernández, deputy minister of Naturalization and Migration, who said that they are organizing the logistics of place for the renewal of immigration status.

He indicated that those who did not comply with the regularization plan have to regularize their situation through the Migration law, in the General Directorate of Migration.

He said that during the process of regularization that won last year was handed over to Card and Striker to more than 200,000 foreigners, mostly Haitians.

"We ask those people who have to renew their immigration status so they can continue with a regular stay in the Dominican Republic," said Fernandez. However, he said that the method and the process that will be used to renew those cards and Striker will soon be announced and said.

On the other hand, he welcomed the measures being taken by the authorities in the presence of documented illegal, mainly Haitian.

"Migration, as it corresponds, is doing some operations in relation to citizens of any nationality that is in an irregular situation in the country, which is a normal thing and that in all countries is used," said Fernandez.
