The Dominican Government announced that it relaunched the Program of Popular Sales of foodstuffs, which will reach 10 provinces of the South zone of the country and will be realized through the Comedores Economicos.

He said in a press release that the products have the highest quality standards and low prices, which will benefit more than 200 thousand people in the southern region of the country.

The director general of the agency, Nicolás Calderón, in leading the start of the day yesterday explained that it is always a concern of President Danilo Medina that the population receive with guarantee, security and low prices quality food.

Calderon said that the program will be developed every fortnight for a period of three months in the 10 provinces of the southern area with an investment of approximately 450 million pesos.

Food bags at RD $ 300

He explained that the bags containing the basic products of the family basket have an approximate value in the market of 870 pesos, but are sold to the population at 300 pesos, representing a saving of 65 percent. Families can also buy a chicken for 100 pesos, he added.

The combo contains 5 pounds of rice, 2 pounds of kidney beans, a 16-ounce bottle of oil, cornmeal, oatmeal, 8-ounce tomato sauce, two cans of sardines, 2 pounds of cream sugar, chocolate, garlic paste, Seasoning powder, spaghetti and casabe.

The official said that this program, which for several years the institution has been developing with the objective of impacting low middle class families, will not affect the special programs of food donation to families with limited economic resources.

"This program we do in addiction to traditional food donation programs and special operations that the institution develops throughout the national geography," said Calderón.

The head of the agency also reported that to prevent this program from being denaturalized or that the products are resold at a price, the sale was established by people of no more than two bags containing the products.

10 provinces

In this first day, the sales were developed successfully in several communities in the provinces of San Cristóbal, Peravia (Bani), San José de Ocoa, Azua and San Juan.

Next Saturday, the program will take the Region of Enriquillo, which includes the provinces of Barahona, Pedernales, Bahoruco, Elías Piña and Independencia.

The head of the organization said that to ensure that these products reach a large number of families, exhausted a process of work and coordination with the authorities of the provinces that will benefit from this program.

they are still serving but they are in relatively few locations. the government also has a fleet of mobile units that prep and serve food during emergencies, natural disasters and so on. the plan to sell small bags of food supplies is meant to reach further that stationary comedores.

There are quite a few in the southwest, I've passed the one in San Cristobal a million times, it's really large. Maybe that's why they rolled out this program in that area of the country? Lots of poor people.

larger cities have them. but even then it presents issues of getting to a particular location from a barrio further away, not to mention transport from somewhere in a campo.

agreed on comedor food too. basic but decent. tasty, even. large portions, very filling. i could cut two meals for myself from a single serving.

Yes, as far as I know. This is food to buy and take home. I guess they decided the best place to offer it is the place where the needy go to eat already.

So on top, the government is now topping that with groceries at cheaper prices at the comedores?

I dont like these programs. It is socialism meant to buy votes. This is a long slippery slope to communism that America has been on since the civil rights movement

Come on amigo .. :). Cheaper food for the poor I do not see any problem with that. This is not for you and me who has never had to go hungry in our lives.

I respect that maybe a way to buy votes but still the benefits exceeds any negatives I would assume.

I agree,
Canada has its fair share of visible Socialism.... but in the isolated places there are many people who fend for themselves in the bush for the ''Country Food''.
We have ''food banks'' in virtually every town and city.
They are there for a reason.
Socialism does not necessarily lead to Communism..... totally disagree with that one.

Also in the RD the country folk really elp one another when they can. They take in children, make room for extended families, and many times fundraise for their Neighbours when medical care becomes urgent.
Not Socialism, just caring people.

Good post AE. I never knew of that program and will inform those that I know that are in need to make use of it even if I have to front them the 300 pesos.

Im sure that most of it will be resold at market rates.

If it were bought by people like you probably, but it is being sold to people whp may well not have had anything to eat yesterday and they will make good use of it for sure.

Sorry bro, I dont like the idea. It is a complete purchase of votes, just as the Democrats have done in the inner cities for 40 years.

You lived in the barrio did you not ? You understand how these people live, think and act. Loyalty is non existent, they rob cheat and steal with impunity. Why should decent hard working people who pay ridiculous taxes while still paying for private schools, private clubs etc have to pay even a penny so that these losers can eat for cheap ? It frees up money for alcohol, drugs, gambling and promiscuity and all evils that are prevalent in poor "urban" communities in the Americas.

To digress ....these are the EXACT items ( and quantities)  that we had in our food parcel gifts to the poor last month ...the market value for us came to around 1200 pesos  for each parcel . I do hope that this program is successful in reaching the people who really NEED it .

It's better than the politicians stuffing their pockets with the public funds.
