Hi,
I am looking for a vehicle, preferably part time 4 wheel drive and preferably close to Las Terrenas. Budget is low, around the US$6k mark.

If anybody knows of anything, PM me please.

Cheers
Roy

you can try sending the gorgon a PM because for awhile he was helping people find vehicles, although he is in the puerto plata area.

He will help.

It'll be SD or Moca I expect.....that's where the action is

actually, WW, Santiago is the real deal. SD is the absolute best, in terms of numbers and selection, but Moca is all hype..

for a budget like the OP, it is always best to luck out and get a car from someone you know..

I guess Gorgon is not going to run around, hearing No, No, not this one for this budget. Unless he charges for every check and visit.

Sorry gorgon

I use Moca and Santiago interchangeably..when talking cars.
And I agree...I see some great cars on lots in STI

Between SD and STI you have over half the population of the country.

Guess where the cars are?

there was a time when Moca was all the rage. the prices were great, and so was the selection. then they started running with the hype. all kinds of fly by nights opened lots, selling the worst junk for outrageous prices. today, if you want to get beat, go to Moca. the only good guy left there is Turin.

$6000 won't buy you much in the DR but that being said you can find vehicles out there. I would be very careful with the condition, especially with the engine, transmission, brakes, shocks, tires and other hidden problems. I would try to find a private individual that has a valid service history and documentation of any repairs that have been done. Remember also that the registration and title procedure is more involved in the DR and you will have to go to Santo Domingo to get this done.

nobody is going to have a valid service history of a 2001 Suzuki Grand Vitara, because that is what 6 grand will get you.

and you dont need to go to SD to do the transfer..

So $6K is around 280,000 pesos.  Having a quick look on Corotos, this what your $6k will get you:

05 Ford Escape

00 Rav4

01 Disco

01 CR-V

03 Santa Fe

03 Montero

04 Murano

01 Montero

My choice out of that lot would probably be the Mitsubishi Montero.  Dominicans call them "Cara de gato" or cat's face.  They used to be very popular, but it seems like prices have dropped now.  But they have robust mechanicals and any Dom mechanic can fix it.  Diesels are economical, but can be troublesome if not maintained properly,  Gas versions are thirsty.

your last sentence says it all. gas versions are thirsty. very, very, thirsty. personally, i have begun to like Escapes, for value and price..

Yes they are, and for that reason many Dominican owners convert them to LPG.  Some conversions are horrendous and are a fireball waiting to happen.  If you can find a nice diesel that's been well looked after, you can end up with a gem.

Don't know much about the Escape, other than it leaves me completely cold.

I also put the Discovery on the list, just to give an idea, but for the love of all things holy, please don't!

there is a lovely english adjective that describes the Escape, to a T.

Utilitarian. useful, if not attractive.

there is a car that gives even worse mileage than the Cara de Gato. the Nissan XTerra. i am yet to look at one which has not been converted to propane. nobody can buy gas for that thing.

Utilitarian....
is a good way to decide on/buy cars....especially here

Not flashy but useful....

when someone asks for my assistance, that is the first thing i suggest to them. forget the looks and the bling. get something which can withstand the rigors of life in the DR.
