I keep getting asked this question at the grocery store here, but don't have one of these numbers.

What is the advantage of having this number? Do you get a return of tax monies at the end of the year and what percent is returned?

I read that educational expenses, including tuition, can also be returned by using this number. However, I can not find anywhere the exact amount in percentage terms that would be returned-it only states until 25%.

Anyone with experience here can tell me how this number has benefited them and also what are the disadvantages of having this number? Thanks.

It's for tax purposes. If you have a business, you have a tax ID#. Anything you purchase for use in that business is deductible. I suppose if you have properties that you rent out and pay tax on the income, you want proof of expenses for repairs and upkeep. You still need a tax ID#. The receipt will print out with your name and tax ID# on it.

It's not for the regular/average person.
