Private clinics will no longer accept outside diagnostic tests
The National Association of Private Clinics (Andeclip) decided that surgery patients need to do all their diagnostic tests at the clinic where the surgery will be carried out. The president of the Andeclip, Rafael Mena said that the clinics are being “economically strangled” and the measure seeks to improve their finances. Andeclip has 116 members nationwide.

Andeclip also justified the measure saying that the private medical centers are being sued for mal practice and they consider restricting the diagnostics to their own facilities would improve their controls and reduce the legal suits. The diagnostic tests include computerized tomographies, magnetic resonance imaging, x rays, lab tests, among others. Mena said the clinics do not want to be paying for errors of others. He said they have around 500 suits for medical malpractices.

The measure, if it goes forward, will primarily affect hundreds of diagnostics businesses located nationwide. The Ministry of Public Health has not issued an opinion on the Andeclip decision.

Will the ruling PLD political party split?
Diario Libre political analysts have been speculating former President Leonel Fernandez could split from the PLD and separately form his own political party. Fernandez is the president of the ruling Dominican Liberation Party, but analysts indicate the extreme measure is a possibility if President Danilo Medina and followers continue to present obstacles to Fernandez running for President according to the 2015 Constitution.

The 2015 Constitution that enabled President Medina to seek re-election in 2016 bans his running for the presidency again. The same Constitution allows for former President Fernandez (1996-2000, 2004-2008, 2008-2012) to seek the presidency in 2020.

The Political Committee of the PLD has delayed the passing of the Political Parties and Electoral bills. A major snag is that members loyal to President Danilo Medina want to incorporate the open primaries voting system to elect presidential candidates. This has already been banned by a Supreme Court of Justice ruling. The open primaries system would allow all on the Central Electoral Board list of voters to choose the candidate for president for any political party and is said to favor the candidate with the biggest pockets of cash.

The Medina government has a majority in senators and deputies, and is majority in the Political Committee of the PLD.

TB Joshua fills Olympic Stadium with those seeking miracles
Thousands of people congregated at the Felix Sanchez Olympic Center for an opportunity to find healing with Nigerian evangelist TB Joshua. From 8am, the believers came from all parts of the country seeking to be healed through their devotion to the African prophet said to do miracles. However, the Listin Diario reported that hundreds of real sick people were prevented from getting near the prophet. Likewise, media photographers were restricted from where they could cover the event.

During his visit, the Nigerian evangelist was received by President Danilo Medina at the Presidential Palace. He was accompanied by his daughter Sarah Joshua and Dominican pastors Miguel Bogaert, Rafael Cruz Lora, Reynaldo Aquino and Abel Tejeda.

Likewise, the founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) was officially recognized by the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies of the Dominican Republic. The awards were conferred on Friday, 25 November, in the evening at the end of the first day of the two-day crusade at the Felix Sanchez Olympic Stadium.

On Monday, 27 November 2017, Diario Libre’s front page feature asks who sponsored the Nigerian’s visit, observing that he was received at the airport with military salutes and escorted by these to the capital city. The newspaper also remarks that the Nigerian was received by President Medina, and the government bus agency, the OMSA offered free transport to the Olympic Stadium that was put at his disposition. It also mentions, the evangelist was recognized by Congress. Diario Libre asks what all this could have cost the state.

Diario Libre said the Presidency says the visit was coordinated by bishop Elvis Medina, who is the liaison for the evangelical churches with the Presidency.

High incidence of HIV in Haitian immigrants
The executive director of the National Council for HIV and AIDS (Conavihsida) Victor Terrero said that Haitian immigrants are 47.8% of new HIV cases. He said the statistic is a major challenge to public policies and the country. He said men that have sex with men and trans people contribute 29.9% of the new cases, with women sex workers contributing 10.6%.

He said the prevalence of HIV is an indication of where the most poverty is located. He said in southwestern Barahona near the border with Haiti, the prevalence of HIV is 1.1%, while in Santo Domingo it is 0.5%, the lowest in the country.

Suspected femicide turns himself in
On Friday, 24 November 2017, Martin Batista Ogando, the man the authorities suspect murdered 28-year old Geraldine Ivette Sanchez Baldera, turned himself in to the police at around 9:30pm. Hours earlier, the authorities had identified Batista as a “person of interest” and possible gunman involved in the death of Sanchez. In the afternoon, the Police had reported finding the Toyota 4Runner believed to have been in possession of the suspect. She had a two-year old boy with Batista.

According to the work companions of Sanchez, she had received a call when at work. She went outside and met with Batista in his SUV who had brought goods for their two-year old son and they discussed. She was shot dead.

Batista is being held at the Department of Criminal Investigations of the Police.

Sanchez was buried on Saturday at the Cristo Redentor Cemetery, only two km from where she lived in Los Girasoles neighborhood.

The late Sanchez had previously filed a complaint with the judiciary for violence exercised against her by Batista Ogando. The same court that had authorized his release on bail and a restraining order after the complaint for violence was placed. This time, Judge Jose Alejandro Vargas ordered one-year pre-trial custody at the Azua Jail. The judge told Batista he could expect a 30-year jail sentence.

The death adds to the femicide statistics in the Dominican Republic that according to the Intec Gender Center are 180.

Kudos to Dolores.....we do not know who started this fire....we need to wait for an actual investigation instead of rumors...
