A few corrections are in order.

# 1 Us currency is made with a mixture of Paper and Cotton

# 8 A duck's quack can echo. They cannot defy the law of physics. Put that in the "urban Legend" pile

# 18 Orca's and Sharks usually steer clear of each other. Even though many Great White sharks that have been caught have had remains of Killer Whale offsprings in their stomach. The killer whale exploding sharks thing is silly. It couldn't possibly happen. Maybe you have been watching too many reruns of "Flipper"

# 25 I have been hearing the clock in Vegas thing for years. Now when I go I look for clocks and guess what? Yes there are clocks in Vegas Casinos. I have seen them in the MGM, The Bilaggio and Mandalay Bay.

# 34 Quick Sand is just a pocket of water and sand. If you just stay still you will float just like in water. The only people who have died in "quick Sand are those who panic. The same type of people who drown in 2 feet of water.

I am left with re-posting my infamous list of

True Facts About DR that I Made Up Myself
(Or How To Explain Some Things To Dumb Foreigners)

A 1952 ?Cruelty Against Farm Animals Law? was passed to prevent owners from depriving farm animals of their freedom, thus farm animals can freely move along roads in the DR. The law does not specify however how drivers would avoid hitting them.

The secret ingredient in Presidente beer is the root of a plant only found in DR. This plant was widely used by the Taino for its properties, known to cause people to forget about financial problems and make them believe they are smarter, stronger and more attractive than they are. It is mildly addictive.

A rare imbalance of gases in Santo Domingo?s air causes car engines to slow down in certain circumstances. Drivers must constantly use their horn in order to gain momentum as the air expelled balances out this combination of gases.

For a period of 24 hours in 1916 Santo Domingo was declared a United States colony for the sole purpose of naming the important streets of Santo Domingo after famous American presidents. The Trujillo-Hall treaty prevented the re-naming of the streets. A monument in ?El Malecon? commemorates this event.

By law all Dominicans must serve as street vendors for two months to train Dominicans in marketing and customer service. All the vendors at traffic lights are currently serving their training time.

A study published by Harvard professor Hans Anderson, M.D. proved that Brugal has indeed aphrodisiac properties. The study also revealed that in a small percentage of users the intake of Brugal might also cause tendencies to start fights.

Among scholars it is widely accepted that Bachata is an early form of the Austrian waltz. It has not being properly explained however how it appeared and became so popular in the DR.

In 1987 the UN accepted Cibae?o as a language. In 2025 it is expected to be taught in schools and probably declared the official language of the Dominican Rep. A few dictionaries are being compiled at the moment.

Contrary to popular belief, Santo Domingo and Puerto Rico are not separate islands. A narrow bridge of land that appeared 25 million years ago joins both islands. A conspiracy of both governments of DR and US has effectively kept the population from knowing this fact.

Things you didnt know:

1)The truest Dominican drink is the Mabi Ceibano. This wonderful drink can be found in a grocery, mini market across from Parque Independencia in the corner of Arzobizpo Nouel St. for a mere $7 pesos a bottle. This is better than Coke or Pepsi , believe me. Not too far from there, on the same street there is a small bakery store that sell "Borrachos", a red colored pastry with rum. In my opinion the best pastry ever created.

2)Membership in some of our private clubs, like Club Naco could cost as much as $200,000 a year. The Carol Morgan School tuition for new students the present school year stands at $140,000 for second graders to $185,000 for 9-12 graders. When you add books, food, trips, uniforms, transportation, activities, etc. you better save close to $500,000 per child. Not much different at other American Schools like St. George.

3)There are 5 houses in the Cerros de Gurabo Hills in Santiago selling for as much as $40,000,000 pesos.

4)A great number of drivers, security personnel and bodyguards for high class Dominicans are actual members of our Armed Forces currently on the government payroll. Many army and police officers on active duty spend most of their time in their private enterprises.

5)Contrary to the general idea, Anacaona Avenue is not the chic-est Avenue in the city of Santo Domingo. The number one address here is Avenida Pedro Henriquez Ure?a. Those who live at El Vergel will within 10 years be living in perhaps the costliest residential 10 blocks in the Americas.

6)Guibia is one of 50 dangerous beaches being closed for Holy Week through DR. Most dangerous beaches are located in Santo Domingo, Barahona and San Pedro de Macoris. These beaches have no protection, lifeguards and have strong undercurrents.

7)A costume for a Diablo Cojuelo from the La Vega Carnival costs upwards of $15-20,000 pesos. Some of the masks costs $5,000.
The high price of these costumes escalated when the New York contingents from Queens, New York began to participate actively and using fancy fabrics from 7th. Avenue. The costumes are never used again by the Vegan diablos, but are sold to the poorer towns like Bonao and Salcedo for their local carnivals. With the participation of Baninter this year, expect an escalation of prices and fancier outfits as new sponsors will fight to be the best.

8)The DR Armory built its only Dominican made automatic machine gun called "The San Cristobal" and a gun called the "Enriquillo" named after one of our Indian Chiefs. The San Cristobal was widely used by the Dominican armed forces and its presently in the arsenal of many retired brass. It is a collectors item, but it is still in prohibition for civilians.

9)Corpses and body parts are being extracted from cemeteries by medical students, witchcraft doctors, and religious cults. Prices for heads and bones go as high as $1000 pesos. During religious holidays fresh flowers brought by grieving families will be taken by vendors to be resold. The sidewalks at cemeteries are being sold by administrators to bury the dead. Local cemetery buhoneros will bury your lot in garbage to force you to buy their services at the next visit.

10)One of the so-called heroes who killed Trujillo, who died himself in an ambush in Gazcue ordered by Ramfis, was himself as feared as Trujillo in the bordering areas with Haiti. He would travel as far as the town of Restauracion near Loma de Cabrera, where he visited his successful lumber business. He made his wealth during Trujillo. Families used to hide their beautiful daughters when he travelled there.

11)One living "hero" who killed Trujillo is one of the richest men in DR and drives in a Lincoln Continental limo with a military escort larger than any during Trujillo. At least 3 motorcycles drive in front and as many as 4 Montero jeepetas cover this expensively equipped car. Among his fetishes include a front brass license plate with 3 stars. In the front seat passenger seats a high ranking officer who gets out of the car in every stop to open the door for him. Just like Trujillo did, he takes weekend drives by the Malecon with his entire entourage. Almost all of his male family members became high ranking officers in the police, including chiefs. He has managed some of the richest government enterprises as his own chiefdom.

12)Two of the most prominent young historians(in their 50s) in the Dominican Republic never graduated from a known university and never took any courses of world history anywhere in their lives. One of them is currently a major corporate executive, yet he used to be a corner street unemployed bohemian in Washington Heights yet has written Dominican history books. In New York he was given the nickname of an oriental wrestler.Few in DR know this nickname, which he detests. The other was a middle ranking officer during the *65 revolution who took advantage of the confusion and drove a tank column thru Puente Duarte to Ciudad Colonial. He was later given a bogus rank by the Constitutionalists(Caama?os men) and after that became an authority on Dominican history. That just goes to show you the validity of what most people read today. In fact this historian has recreated some of our biggest historical battles.

Just some things you ought to know about DR.......

An interesting fishing tidbit!

Sportsfisherman in the DR will cut down some australian pine trees and attach a 100 foot weighted line to it and drop it 200 to 300 feet of water. they do this about a month before a tournament. They know that Baitfish will be attracted to this debris thus attracting Gamefish. Instant Artficial Reef!

tidbit someone just sent me...

Brass monkey:

In the heyday of sailing ships, all war ships and many freighters carried iron cannons. Those cannons fired round iron cannon balls. It was necessary to keep a good supply near the cannon, but prevent them from rolling about the deck. The best storage method devised was a square based pyramid with one ball on top, resting on four resting on nine, which rested on sixteen.

Thus, a supply of thirty cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon. There was only one problem how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding/rolling from under the others. The solution was a metal plate called a, "Monkey," with sixteen round indentations. If this plate was made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make "Brass Monkeys."
Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled. Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the cannon balls would come right off the monkey. Thus, it was quite literally, "Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey!"

And all this time, you have had dirty thoughts, haven't you, about a common expression that reflects only a bit of historical knowledge?!

Things you may not know about the DR

1- If a dominican spider (cacata) bites you, then you have to eat feces if you want to live. Otherwise you die! The same remedy works if you're ever bitten by a guaba. This is a bug which I have personally never seen, but always heard about. Have you seen a guaba lately?
2-The crocodiles in Enriquillo Lake were originally brought in by the Trujillo government to create a "natural" attraction
3-Balaguer has several illegitimate kids

Suarezn, if a cacata bites you, unless you are allergic to the venom, you will not die. The Dominican cacata or tarantula is not highly venomous. People who are bitten liken it to a wasp or bee sting. Anyone who told you you would die from the bite is "full of sh*t" and doesn't need the antidote anyway. (Smile).

Did you know that the karsk system under they island may rival that found in the Yucatan?
