I've been to the DR, many times and travelled "Solo", although Punta Cana is my favourite spot, better beaches and ocean is wonderful. You & your friend have nothing to worry about. Be adventurous, explore and find out about their culture. A little spanish will go a long way. Make friends so that if and when you go back you'll know someone.
