Is it better to exchange money here in New York, or should the money be exchanged in Santo Domingo? Where will I get a better rate?

Do not exchange money at ANY airport before taking a flight. You will get clipped for sure. Better to do it in the DR.

OR after a flight, ALL airports are clips joints, taxi's all take USD.
There are cambios near all hotels in Santo Domingo.
Where are you staying and we can suggest a safe place.

When traveling, unless you're in need of a currency that it is widely traded in foreign exchange markets, you always lose by exchanging at home.  Always exchange at the destination, and never at airports !!

My friend was leaving the other day thru SDQ and needed to exchange her pesos to dollars.

SHe called from the airport to tell me what a great deal she got at SDQ....56:1

I reminded her that she was on other side of that trade - the number should have been closer 48/49

In all, she only had 8,000 pesos so she lost about $20.

Not bad for the last resort.....

She had exchanged thousands of pesos at banks which didn't have enough US cash...

What up with that ..banks short on US currency doesn’t make sense ? Is it because it mostly paper money transfers?

Hard . cold cash can be hard to come at any time in the RD banks....

They don't store it locally... goes to SD.

I just got some today but I ordered it last week

Not odd really - foreign cash in any bank ( US- Canada) is hard to come by..
Try walking in for pesos in Atlanta or Toronto... or UK pounds or Euros

I saw Euros today when getting my $$

I know they ship it to SD...

I was with my friend as we canvassed local cambios..
most had no US$$$ - they too centralize it.... it seems

I asked today for UK at the cambio...
he had none but made a call - he may have some by Wednesday

Funny business - cash
