The DR (or more correctly the island of Hispanola) was the first island of the AMERICAS discovered by Columbus some 500 years ago. It is the beginning of the civilisation (?????) of the Americas with the first Church, First University & FIRST many other things, brought from Europe to the Americas.

It is best known for it very friendly people & they are surely one of the country's greatest attractions (ask any of the many girls who has fallen in love with members of the animations staff in the various hotels!!). There's many a book written on it's history - try looking at www.Hispanola.com - Grahame Bush.

The weather,and the beaches

The weather and the beaches are just about perfect! You can spend as little,or as much as you want for a week in paradise.Food is varied and complimented by fresh fruits. The music has a distinct Dominican flavor, and style."Presidente" beer, many "Rums"!Where else, when your car breaks down in the middle of the street, will 8 men appear out of "nowhere" to push you to safety?????....and then there is what Tony "said" too!!!Criss Colon

All of the above!

But to me, the Dominican Republic is best known for having the most extensive selection of good looking men...DOMINICANOS!!!

It also exports the odd melon or two AND bananas!!!

It has the mountains, valleys, plains, greenery & dessert areas that make other islands sort of Non-descript & the only cable-car system in the Caribbean (if only it would WORK on a regular basis!!!).

Enough for you yet?? Get yourself down here to sample ALL the pleasures - We need your money to fund our development into the 20th Century (YES, I KNOW it is the 21st century, but let us get to the 20th first!!). - Grahame Bush.

WHOLE ISLAND??

BushBaby,

The last I heard the island of Hispanola had TWO distinct and separate countries on it.

Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

To suggest that the DR should be " More correctly" called Hispanola ignores that and suggests that the inhabitants of both countries are one and the same. :(

I don't think you wanted to say that :)

Here is my piece

Dominican Republic is known for one thing. Those who come here once they get the taste of this dont want to leave. Those who leave regret they ever did and swear to come back, but it gets harder and harder, because we have finally been rediscovered and only the powerful, the gritty and the entrepeneurial can make this come true.

There is no country in the world where your money can make more of an impact than this tiny little nation. There are pleasures and luxuries that can be had in this paradise that may take you selling a million CDs and be a superstar to obtain them somewhere else.

I can't believe I'm going to say this...

...but I will!!!

For the first time, hopefully not the last, I agree with Golo.

What an incredibly honest and true answer!

Ok, enough of that.

Did everybody see my new "tag" line?

Courtesy of Mr. Criss Colon...thank you, sir!

The truth hurts

Uh, many who visit the DR do feel this way, and it seems that people either love it or hate it, but amongst the Americans I know that have visited the DR (granted, mostly they visit Punta Cana or Playa Dorada), most hate it and will never go back, despite my best efforts to convince them to the contrary.

It seems the more well traveled a person is, the more likely they will hate it, the less traveled, the more they will like it (mostly from ignorance about the rest of the wonderful places in the world).

In my experience:

#1 reason for people loving it? The people! (read: the ladies like the Dominican men, the men like the Dominican ladies).

#1 reason for people hating it? Quality of everything sucks.

There are many many places in the world where the dollar goes a LOT farther than the Dominican Republic, just not in the Caribbean.

Travel to the DR

I visited the DR for the first time last month.I loved it!I can't stop thinking about it,and I'm pretty well traveled.I can't explain the hold that it has on me,I've even started taking Spanish lessons, and planning my next trip.I have been to lots of places that I like, but none that had this effect on me.I honestly don't see how anyone could not love it there.Could be the language thing.People that speak English tend to believe that anyone can understand them if they just speak slowly enough.I thought the people were great and the service fantastic. The DR seems to get a bad rap in the states. When I told people I was going all I heard was"why do you want to go there?"You would have thought I was going to Afganistan.I think the DR has a pr problem.I understand that as well.I have not told anyone how nice it is there. It felt good to be the only American staying at a motel for a change.I liked it just the way it is.If a bunch of Americans start going and take over the place, the prices will go up and ruin it for everyone, just like in Aruba.I know that sounds selfish but so be it.Not feeling like I'm in the fiftyfirst state is a large part of the charm for me
