I am meeting a friend for lunch tomorrow who is leaving for POP on April 17. She would like to take a day trip to Santiago. Since I don't know the city well, I don't know what advice to give them for places to go. Any suggestions, or should they take a day trip to Santiago offered by the hotels (if there is such a thing...going with World of Vacations)?

I am flabergasted that you just didn't tell her that you know the most "Know-it-all" of Santiago!! How could you?

Imagine, you know someone who has been here since forever....

Things to see:

The Park and Cathedral
The Monument
Tour the L. Le?n Jin?nes Cigar factory
Look at some of the beautiful houses
Shop at Plaza Internacional or in the centro of the city.

If you want, send me an e-mail and perhaps I can help her see the city?

Really,

HB

I was so hoping you'd pipe up! He's a cigar fan, too, so you'd be the perfect person for them to talk to. I'm going to lunch with her tomorrow, so I will mention the offer.

Thank you so much!
Trina

PS
If they do get to meet you, I'll send them with British Columbia's (I'm from Alberta, but the best in the world is BC's) finest maple syrup.

Maple syrup

Take HB as much as possible, how do you get gallons thru customs? I can see the ole boy pouring it on his flapjacks, and licking his lips.
I know he will appreciate but if you could find some Ontario syrup he would be in heaven, definitely the best. Willow Creek (Ontario) syrup was world champion at the Royal Winter Fair.

I'll do my best on the Ontario syrup, but I think most syrups here are from BC...I thought BC syrup was the finest...if I can find both, I'll send both, and let our friend be the judge.

Visit Maromo Restaurant, or drive up to Camp David Ranch(El Generalisimo),or to Caffeto in the mountains near Santiago. Go to the Gran Almirante Casino. They have a nice club downstairs.

If you want a moro chopo ambient go to Ambis Disco, just outside the city on Duarte Highway. They have good music and good dancers.

On your way to Santiago, veer off to Jarabacoa only 15 minutes from Duarte highway and just drive around the nice mountain scenery. Buy some "arepa" by the Bayacanes river. Have a cup of coffee or natural juice "batido" at Alpes Dominicanos restaurant, visit the Salto de Jimenoa bearby.

If your friend is catholic and very religious, stop by Santo Cerro near La Vega. Only problem is the beggars. But it is a typical mountain town.

I second all those recommendations, and if your friend has time and likes nature whatsoever, she can't miss Jarabacoa and the Salto de Jimenoa! My one piece of sage advice: do not forget the mosquito repellent.

But I'm sure if HB takes over the tour she will have a great time and see all the best sights...

there are good computer stores all over:
Cecomsa has two locations: (a) In Do it Best on Bartolom? Col?n
(b) Carr. Luper?n left side of the street after Hach?, about 700 meters
This is one of the better stores, but there is another one just in front of Supermercado POLA that is quite good.
Plaza Internacional is on Juan Pablo Duarte just past the Clinica Materno Infantil on your right side. High end place.

In the phone book there is a page and a half of places with computers...

Hi Hillbilly! I just got back with lunch from my friend, they are going to call you when they get there, if that's okay. I sent some maple syrup and some maple butter with them for you.

Thanks all for your suggestions, it's their second time to the island, and they cannot wait!
