The Dominican Republic is endeavoring to get rid of all the tattered and torn bills that have been circulating for years. Residents are aware of this, but it is important that all visitors know they must carefully scrutinize every bill they receive from any source. Any that are damaged in any way, any that have anything written on them, any that are perforated, any that are torn--even if taped, any showing anything other than normal wear and tear should be rejected. If not you'll find that you are stuck with it.
For the past several months, it has been possible to exchange at the banks bills that the merchants wouldn't accept for any of the above reasons. But effective April 20, the banks will no longer exchange these damaged or marked bills for valid ones.
So be on guard. Either look those bills over carefully or you'll take them home with you.
