Hi I am an American citizen and I know to go to Mexico I just need a valid driver's license or birth certificate. Do I need a passport to go to the DR?

It helps to have a passport. It makes it much easier and quicker to go through the lines. When we went into the airport, the people with passports went on one line, which was short and the other people without them stood in a long line and had to fill out papers. Enjoy your trip!

Passports are also useful when changing money.

I just returned from the DR on Thursday. I got a higher exchange rate when using my check card at a local Banco Popular branch in San Francisco de Macoris than I did when I exchanged US cash dollars for pesos at Las Americas airport. They did require a passport for ID.

I also used my Visa card to buy pesos at that same bank, but haven't yet received my statement to compare exchange rates.
