from MV Sunbird

Hi DR1 gang, we are currently 900miles east of the DR in the Atlantic Ocean 5 more days before we reach Madeira, wonderful cruise. Getting drunk having drinks for all you guys, and will be broke, they are very expensive onboards.
It is very warm like in the DR 90 F today and breezy.
See you in a couple weeks on the board.

Over the Edge

Wud, pay attention at the lifeboat drill, because when the ship starts to head west you can be assured it is going to fall off the edge of the earth. You will need to know how to man the lifeboat and row fast east to save your butt.

More cruise humor: A panicked passenger telephoned the purser's desk from the cabin: ''Please help me, I'm stuck in my cabin,'' the distraught passenger's voice wailed. ''I see two doors, but one goes to the bathroom and the other has a 'Do Not Disturb' sign on it!''

Regards, PJT

Cruise or Island Vacation?

I've always wondered about cruises. travelling in a floating hotel, so to speak.

I have never done it but several friends, and now Wud, are doing it....Can't say for the life of me why..

I once had a lovely girlfriend that went to Europe on the Il d'France, Georgeous ship, wonderful send off and all that, but why>?

You can fly there in a few hours and rent a car and drive all over...

That cruise ships are moneymakers is obvious!. There is a huge new Queen Mary II on the works right now. Everything you do or eat or drink is extra. Even if it is Cordon Bleu vs. that oxymoron called 'airline food' , all that money .. Massages? $$ Gambling?? More $$ Anything else, more $$. And you have to tip....like in a restaurant...Jeez, today I am a curmudgeon...

I think that it might be exotic to see the Alaskan Glaciers or Antartica from a ship.....Galapagos? Maybe.

Perhaps I like my cake and want to eat it , too!. I have driven from Naples to Florence, from NYC to Key West. You stop whenever and whereever you wish....I don't know, it is just more down to earth....

A floating non-all-inclusive....man what a money maker....

I guess thats why we call you "Hillbilly"

You can take a 7 day cruise through the Carribean for about $1.000 per person including airfare from your hometown to Miami, and back. Not an outside cabin with a deck, but the whole ship goes to the same place at the same time! Everyone eats the same food. The food I have eaten, even on Carnival Cruises was 3-4 *s.If you figure airfare from Chicago,to Miami,to Jamaica,to Cayman Islands,to 2 ports in Mexico,to Miami, and back to Chicago.Well, you do the math. The routine is to sail at night, arrive in a port at morning, day in port, set sail at sunset, etc. In Jamaica we visited a working plantation, saw planting and harvesting of fruits, vegetables,"canela",I don,t think I can spell"cinnamon"?We went to "Dunn,s River Falls",a must, and an open market, cost $50 each including lunch and mucho rum punch!Set sail to arrive in the am at Georgetown Grand Cayman.Day at the most beautiful beach I have ever seen, including a picnic of roasted chicken with all the side dishes. The hotel analogy is a good one.You have the same room for the week, yet visit 5 or 6 different cities(Islands)You don,t have to pack and un-pack everyday!24 hr. room service.Best bang for your buck on the vacation market.Try it, your wife will love you for it! .Oh!,How about a nice Cubano cigar in the smoking lounge after dinner?Care for a Brandy with that?Criss CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC

Yes I am!

Home now

I arrived home last night at 10:30 pm, 6 hour time change and 9.5 hour flight, broke to say the least, although the casino on board was fairly good to my warden (wife).
A few tidbits of information, seas were never over 8 feet high so it was relatively smooth, but as we neared Morocco tempratures dipped into low 60's a bit chilly on deck when you are crusing at 22 knots.
Food was excellent, service very good, entertainment sucked big time, drinks were expensive by Canadian and Dominican standards about $7 US for a round of cuba libre (for wife) and a beer for me.
Islands visited were excellent, but the island of Madeira I must say is the most beautiful I have ever seen. Simply marvelous.
Trip duties on Palma Majocca assigned by Hillbilly were carried out with no success as his friend was not home or available, but I tried HB.
Glad to be HOME. Link to pictures later when they are uploaded.
